NYC Weather Update – Jun 5, 2017

The beginning of June sure won’t feel like summer with an extended period of unsettled weather through midweek due to the influence of a very slow moving set of low pressure centers. However, forecast models are trending towards a warm up towards the end of the week and going into the weekend.

Rest of today – mostly cloudy with high temperatures approaching 70ºF. Periods of rain possible later in the day along with a couple thunderstorms.

Tuesday – periods of showers likely throughout the day with temperatures much cooler in the mid-50s due to the influence of an onshore, northeasterly wind.

Wednesday – mostly cloudy again, with rain chances gradually diminishing. Cool, with temperatures in the low-60s.

Thursday – finally get a shift in winds away form the northeast. Partly sunny, and warmer with high temperatures near 70ºF.

Warmup Ahead

Climate Prediction Center forecasts for 6-10 days out show a pronounced warm up occurring over the Eastern US as high pressure starts to setup over the western Atlantic. This weekend should feature temperatures closer to normal in the upper-70s and low-80s.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jun 2, 2017

This weekend will feature mostly sunny skies, seasonable, and pleasant conditions until late in the day Sunday when our next chance for rain moves in. The low pressure causing this next round of rain looks to linger well into mid-week next week, which will bring on several days of cool, cloudy, and rainy weather to contrast with the beginning of the weekend.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with some slight chance for scattered thunderstorms, most likely appearing west of NYC. High temperatures ranging in the mid-upper 70s.

Saturday – mild, pleasant, mostly sunny with high temperatures in the mid-70s. High pressure will be in control for a day.

Sunday – high pressure starts breaking down as the next storm system approaches. This storm system will be a complex and slow moving one. While the bulk of the moisture associated with this storm looks to stay offshore, we will still get multiple rounds of rain from it, beginning late Sunday. Temperatures will be a touch cooler in the low-70s with increasing clouds Sunday.

Monday – cloudy with temperatures in the low-70s, and periods of rain likely throughout the day. Kicks off a cooler and wetter than normal trend leading at least into mid-week.

NYC Weather Update – May 30, 2017

Active weather pattern continues this week to open up the month of June, though we aren’t looking at the kind of soaking rains we got last week. Temperatures on a general gradual upwards trend through the week with high temperatures ranging into the mid-upper 70s by the end of the week.

Rest of today – cloudy, with a very slight chance for showers later in the day. Cool with an onshore breeze, high temperatures in the low-60s.

Wednesday – warmer, but still cloudy with chances for showers and thunderstorms during the day as a frontal boundary passes from the west. High temperatures in the mid-70s.

Thursday – high pressure takes control for one solid day on Thursday as temperatures remain in the mid-70s with mostly sunny skies anticipated.

Friday – another nice day to start with mostly sunny skies. Chance of showers and thunderstorms increases late Friday into early Saturday accompanying an approaching cold front. Highs in the upper-70s.

NYC Memorial Day Weekend Weather – May 26, 2017

After a soaking rain yesterday, we enter a holiday weekend with a mixed bag of weather. The first half of the weekend should turn out to be the better half in terms of conditions for outdoor activities. Temperatures during the period will be at or just below normal in the low-mid 70s.

Rest of today – heavy rains fell overnight into early this morning. Mostly sunny skies should give way later in the afternoon to a second round of more scattered showers. High temperatures in the mid-70s and maybe a touch higher depending how much sun we get.

Saturday – best day of the weekend as we get a respite from a near continuous chain of disturbances. Partly sunny with temperatures in the mid-70s.

Sunday – small chance for scattered showers, primarily early in the morning, mostly cloudy and cooler with temperatures in the upper-60s.

Monday (Memorial Day) – increased chance for showers and maybe even a couple thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy otherwise wirh high temperatures around 70F.

NYC Weather Update – May 22, 2017

Quite a contrast in temperatures this week with an active weather pattern that holds chances for precipitation nearly every day of the week. Temperatures will generally range a few degrees below normal. Looking ahead to Memorial Day weekend, weather could be a mixed bag with some rain chances for Sunday and Monday.

Rest of today – cool, cloudy, with steadier rains moving through the afternoon hours into the early evening accompanying the passage of a cold front. High temperatures around 60ºF.

Tuesday – drier with only a slight chance of showers late in the day as another weak disturbance moves by south of region. High temperature around 70ºF and mostly cloudy skies.

Wednesday – scattered showers possible throughout the day. High temperatures again near 70ºF.

Thursday – a warm front and an accompanying low pressure system pass over the area Thursday bringing another chance for widespread rain. Temperatures in the upper-60s under mostly cloudy skies.

NYC Weekend Weather – May 19, 2017

We’re well on pace to hit the low-90s again today, which would officially mark the first heat wave of 2017. The Bermuda high that led to these sultry conditions allowed us to heat up even more than official National Weather Service forecasts called for. Temperatures ranged 20ºF above normal in many places away from south facing shorelines. The weekend sees a drastic change in airmasses and a return to more seasonable conditions before the next chance for rain Monday.

Rest of today – hot, humid, high temperatures reaching the low-90s for most areas again except the south-facing shorelines of Long Island. Air quality has improved today so no alert is active. A cold front passes through the area later this evening, with a chance for isolated thunderstorms.

Saturday – the passage of the cold front late Friday sets the stage for a dramatic shift in airmasses. Behind the cold front, a high pressure center over Canada will bring much cooler air riding winds from the north and northeast. Temperatures Saturday are expected to cool off into the upper-60s, with much drier conditions and mostly sunny skies.

Sunday – another cool day with temperatures in the mid-60s and clouds building ahead of a warm front that will move through Monday.

Monday – a warm front, followed quickly by a cold front pushes through Monday. The result will be mostly cloudy skies and an extended period of showers through the day. Temperatures will be slightly warmer, in the low-70s.

NYC Weather Update – May 15, 2017

Dramatic changes are in store for us this week with respect to the temperature. Mid-summer heat and humidity reach their apex on Thursday with high temperatures climbing into the mid-upper 80s except for areas affected by a sea breeze. For the first time in a while, we will see an extended stretch of dry weather.

Rest of today – very windy with northwest winds 25mph and higher gusts due to the pressure gradient between this weekend’s Nor’easter exiting east and high pressure building to to the west. Wind advisories are up for the city. High temperatures into the mid-60s.

Tuesday – sunny, and a warmup begins with temperatures climbing to the mid-70s.

Wednesday – warmer still, with lots of sun and high temperatures in the low-80s.

Thursday – the warmest day of the week with temperatures reaching well into the mid-upper 80s. High pressure from earlier in the week will slide southeast and eventually build over Bermuda. This is a classic setup that favors warm and humid conditions on the Eastern seaboard as warm air from the gulf and tropics rushes from the southwest clockwise around the high pressure.

Drought Completely Gone

For the first time in a year, no drought conditions existed anywhere in New York State.

NYC Weekend Weather – May 12, 2017

Another rainy weekend on tap for the Tri-State area as a Nor’easter takes aim at the Mid-Atlantic and New England just in time to put a damper on Mother’s Day plans. Luckily for us, rain on actual Mother’s Day should be limited to the morning hours. Next week, we’re looking forward to a big warm up in temperatures.

Rest of today – partly sunny with high temperatures topping out in the low-60s.

Saturday – a Nor’easter moves in on the area overnight into Saturday. Expect raw, windy, rainy conditions for the duration of the day. There could be periods of moderate to heavy rain along with east/east-northeast winds in the 15mph with stronger gusts. High temperatures with the onshore flow, clouds, and rain only expected to reach the low-50s.

Sunday (Mother’s Day) – rains clear up earlier in the day, but we’re still left with a windy and cloudy day. The tradeoff is warmer temperatures in the mid-60s.

Monday – partly sunny skies with improving conditions and high temperatures in the mid-60s.

Warmup Ahead

Starting Tuesday, temperatures begin to warm up significantly with a shift in our weather pattern. A summer-like Bermuda high sets up and pumps in warm air from the south into the area, resulting in temperatures above to well-above normal (some 80s possible late week).

NYC Weather Update – May 8, 2017

Weather conditions calm this week after a wet and unsettled weekend. Temperatures continue to trend below normal for this time of the year. Most of the week looks like it will be dry, with the next chance for rain coming over the weekend.

Rest of today – sunny, with a high near 60°F.

Tuesday – sun and clouds, a high again near 60°F.

Wednesday – slightly warmer with high temperatures possibly moving into the low-60s with more sun anticipated. High pressure should hold up enough to prevent any rain associated with a basically stationary low pressure system to our northeast.

Thursday – high temperatures in the low-60s, increasing clouds.

NYC Weekend Weather – May 4, 2017

This weekend brings a drastic change in temperature from the last, with high temperatures fully 20°F cooler. Not only that, but a slow moving upper low pressure system will induce multiple rounds of rain resulting in an extended period of unsettled weather for the area. The most substantial rain occurs Friday. Temperatures remain 5-8°F below normal during this stretch which continues into next week.

Rest of today – enjoy the bright sun shine while it lasts. With high pressure still in control, expect mostly sunny skies and a high temperature in the low-60s.

Friday – the same storm system that has been impacting the mid-Mississippi Valley with flooding rains starts to move into our region Friday. Steady rains and embedded thunderstorms throughout the day could bring a total of 1-2″ of rainfall totals. The band of heaviest rains appears likely to cross into the city around 11AM. Temperatures will be about the same as today, in the low-60s, under mostly cloudy skies.

Saturday – unfortunately, due to the slow moving nature of the low pressure system responsible for the rain Friday, there remains a lingering chance for rain Saturday, particular late in the day and into the evening. Temperatures remain cool in the low-60s.

Sunday – improving conditions, with rain chances finally diminishing. There could be some breaks for sun, with high temperatures hovering at just about 60°F.

Drought Almost Totally Gone, Cooler Temperatures Prevail

With all of the plentiful spring rains, only a very small slice of the Hudson Valley remains under abnormally dry conditions. Meanwhile, Climate Prediction Center points to cooler conditions continuing into the next 6-10 days.
