NYC Weekend Weather – Jun 9, 2017

Got retrained as a SKYWARN spotter last night – this weekend should be tranquil though. A steady warming trend begins this weekend and lasts through mid-week next week. After a prolonged period of cool and unsettled weather, we could see the second heatwave of the season. Great weekend for a getaway to the beach!

Rest of today – mostly sunny, temperatures in the upper-70s to around 80º. Some residual instability in the wake of a low pressure center exiting the Northeast may touch off a couple isolated showers or thunderstorms.

Saturday – the warmup continues with temperatures climbing into the low-80s. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible again in the afternoon hours with the passage of an upper level disturbance.

Sunday – the heat arrives in earnest as a Bermuda high sets up and begins to strengthen. This will begin pumping in warmer and more humid air from the south and southwest. Temperatures are expected to climb into the low-90s in the city with sunny skies, with cooler temperatures due to the sea breeze on south-facing shores in the mid-80s. Great beach day, and ideal conditions for the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Monday – the heat continues with temperatures again in the low-90s with some spots in the mid-90s and sunny skies. There could be a heat advisory up at some point.

NYC Weather Update – Jun 5, 2017

The beginning of June sure won’t feel like summer with an extended period of unsettled weather through midweek due to the influence of a very slow moving set of low pressure centers. However, forecast models are trending towards a warm up towards the end of the week and going into the weekend.

Rest of today – mostly cloudy with high temperatures approaching 70ºF. Periods of rain possible later in the day along with a couple thunderstorms.

Tuesday – periods of showers likely throughout the day with temperatures much cooler in the mid-50s due to the influence of an onshore, northeasterly wind.

Wednesday – mostly cloudy again, with rain chances gradually diminishing. Cool, with temperatures in the low-60s.

Thursday – finally get a shift in winds away form the northeast. Partly sunny, and warmer with high temperatures near 70ºF.

Warmup Ahead

Climate Prediction Center forecasts for 6-10 days out show a pronounced warm up occurring over the Eastern US as high pressure starts to setup over the western Atlantic. This weekend should feature temperatures closer to normal in the upper-70s and low-80s.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jun 2, 2017

This weekend will feature mostly sunny skies, seasonable, and pleasant conditions until late in the day Sunday when our next chance for rain moves in. The low pressure causing this next round of rain looks to linger well into mid-week next week, which will bring on several days of cool, cloudy, and rainy weather to contrast with the beginning of the weekend.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with some slight chance for scattered thunderstorms, most likely appearing west of NYC. High temperatures ranging in the mid-upper 70s.

Saturday – mild, pleasant, mostly sunny with high temperatures in the mid-70s. High pressure will be in control for a day.

Sunday – high pressure starts breaking down as the next storm system approaches. This storm system will be a complex and slow moving one. While the bulk of the moisture associated with this storm looks to stay offshore, we will still get multiple rounds of rain from it, beginning late Sunday. Temperatures will be a touch cooler in the low-70s with increasing clouds Sunday.

Monday – cloudy with temperatures in the low-70s, and periods of rain likely throughout the day. Kicks off a cooler and wetter than normal trend leading at least into mid-week.

NYC Weather Update – May 30, 2017

Active weather pattern continues this week to open up the month of June, though we aren’t looking at the kind of soaking rains we got last week. Temperatures on a general gradual upwards trend through the week with high temperatures ranging into the mid-upper 70s by the end of the week.

Rest of today – cloudy, with a very slight chance for showers later in the day. Cool with an onshore breeze, high temperatures in the low-60s.

Wednesday – warmer, but still cloudy with chances for showers and thunderstorms during the day as a frontal boundary passes from the west. High temperatures in the mid-70s.

Thursday – high pressure takes control for one solid day on Thursday as temperatures remain in the mid-70s with mostly sunny skies anticipated.

Friday – another nice day to start with mostly sunny skies. Chance of showers and thunderstorms increases late Friday into early Saturday accompanying an approaching cold front. Highs in the upper-70s.

NYC Weekend Weather – May 19, 2017

We’re well on pace to hit the low-90s again today, which would officially mark the first heat wave of 2017. The Bermuda high that led to these sultry conditions allowed us to heat up even more than official National Weather Service forecasts called for. Temperatures ranged 20ºF above normal in many places away from south facing shorelines. The weekend sees a drastic change in airmasses and a return to more seasonable conditions before the next chance for rain Monday.

Rest of today – hot, humid, high temperatures reaching the low-90s for most areas again except the south-facing shorelines of Long Island. Air quality has improved today so no alert is active. A cold front passes through the area later this evening, with a chance for isolated thunderstorms.

Saturday – the passage of the cold front late Friday sets the stage for a dramatic shift in airmasses. Behind the cold front, a high pressure center over Canada will bring much cooler air riding winds from the north and northeast. Temperatures Saturday are expected to cool off into the upper-60s, with much drier conditions and mostly sunny skies.

Sunday – another cool day with temperatures in the mid-60s and clouds building ahead of a warm front that will move through Monday.

Monday – a warm front, followed quickly by a cold front pushes through Monday. The result will be mostly cloudy skies and an extended period of showers through the day. Temperatures will be slightly warmer, in the low-70s.

NYC Weather Update – Feb 27, 2017

The beginning of this week will somewhat echo the end of last week, with temperatures starting off on the cooler side, then ramping up before the passage of a cold front that could also bring some thunderstorms. After this cold front passes, temperatures take a dive closer to normal levels.

Rest of today – increasing clouds will cap temperatures in the low-50s.

Tuesday – warmer but with increasing chances for rain during the day. High temperatures in the upper-50s.

Wednesday – during the early morning hours, a warm front associated with a low pressure center moving across southern Ontario will push through. This will set the stage for possibly record-breaking warmth during the day. Southwest flow will allow temperatures to steadily climb into the upper-60s and possibly over 70°F. Later in the day, a trailing cold front will make its approach. This will serve as a trigger for showers and thunderstorms to develop late in the day and into the early overnight hours. Some of the storms could approach marginally severe criteria.

Thursday – following the cold front passing through, winds shift to the northwest. This will result in much cooler temperatures dropping through the day into the upper-40s.

Cooler Weather Ahead

Looking ahead to the mid-month period, it does appear we may see some cooler than normal temperatures prior to the formal onset of spring.

NYC Weekend Weather – Feb 24, 2017

Enjoy the spring like temperatures while they last. A strong cold front is set to pass through the area late Saturday. Behind this front, temperatures will return to the low-50s, and perhaps colder. Looking ahead for the next week or so, it appears we will see a cyclical pattern of warm weather ahead of storm systems followed by a rush of colder air.

Rest of today – mild, clear skies, high temperatures have already hit nearly 70°F. Overnight, temperatures drop into the low-50s.

Saturday – still quite warm, near 60°F, but with overcast skies and chances for precipitation ramping up through the afternoon hours. A line of moderate to heavy rain is expected to pass through sometime in the early evening hours. Some thunderstorms may be possible with this line of storms.

Sunday – behind this cold front Saturday, temperatures crash back to normal in the mid-40s wtih sunny skies.

Monday – slightly warmer, mostly sunny, with high pressure in control. High around 50°F.

NYC Weekend Weather – Sep 16, 2016

Yesterday was the Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional harvest festival celebrated by many cultures in East Asia. It certainly felt more fall-like yesterday with below average temperatures after we spent one day near 90ºF on Wednesday. The fall weather continues this weekend, with a chance for some much needed rain Sunday.

Rest of today – crisp and cool with high temperatures below normal in the low-mid 70s.

Saturday – a bit warmer, with temperatures a couple degrees above normal under sunny skies, in the upper-70s.

Sunday – ahead of an advancing cold front, we could see showers, thunderstorms, and heavy rain, particularly in the afternoon. high temperatures will warm up a little ahead of this front, into the low-80s under mostly cloudy skies.

Monday – since the frontal boundary won’t pass through until late in the day, there’s a lingering chance for showers with high temperatures hovering around 80ºF.

NYC Weekend Weather – Sep 8, 2016

This past week, weather headlines were dominated by the uncertain course of how Post-tropical Cyclone Hermine would unfold. Now that Hermine has dissipated and is well behind us, we look ahead to the end of the week which will start off warm, but cool off somewhat.

Rest of today – it’s sunny now, but clouds are moving in from the north and west, and will likely result in partly sunny skies later on. High temperatures will range into the upper-80s and around 90ºF in some parts.

Friday – with an area of high pressure to our southwest, warm, humid air from south will flow into the region allowing temperatures to rise into the low-90s. There is a chance for isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon.

Saturday – a frontal boundary will be lingering in our vicinity during the day. This should yield a mostly cloudy day with a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout. High temperatures will be a bit cooler, in the mid-upper 80s.

Sunday – the frontal boundary pushes through as a cold front and brings in some relief from heat and humidity. Skies will clear and allow temperatures to rise to the mid-80s.

Drought Persists, Some Relief Ahead?

Parts of our state are still dealing with an extreme drought, though in our region, we’re “lucky” enough to only have a moderate to severe drought in parts of Long Island. The monthly outlook does call for some drought relief for Long Island, though.

NYC Weekend Weather – Aug 18, 2016

The end of this week and this weekend will see a gradual transition away from the long-lasting heat and humidity that has gripped the area over the last couple of weeks. There will be some chance for showers and thunderstorms each afternoon, with more significant chances for rain Sunday night and going into Monday.

Rest of today – clouds are expected to clear somewhat, allowing high temperatures to reach into the mid-80s. Some slight chance for showers and thunderstorms exists this afternoon.

Friday – mostly sunny skies and high temperatures reaching into the upper-80s, and again, a chance for showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Saturday – pretty much the same as Friday, high temperatures in the upper-80s, with a chance for showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Sunday – starts out decently enough, but clouds will increase, temperatures will probably end up in the mid-80s. A complex set up of multiple frontal boundaries will be moving in/setting up over the area later Sunday into the overnight hours. The exact timing of the arrival of more significant rains is still not very certain.

Monday – depending on the timing of the frontal boundaries above, we could see a mostly dry day Monday, with temperatures in the normal range, right around 85ºF.
