NYC Weekend Weather – May 20, 2016

If there ever was an ideal day to play hooky from work or school, today would be the day. As it turns out, it’s also National Bike to Work Day, and you couldn’t ask for better weather for this. This weekend will be a mixed bag though, with rain developing later on Saturday and possible Sunday. Looking ahead, a Bermuda High sets up in the next week and will push temperatures above normal.

Rest of today – picture perfect conditions, mostly sunny, high temperatures in the mid-70s.

Saturday – mostly cloudy with rain developing in the afternoon and evening hours. A low pressure system offshore to our south will be the cause of this rain, though the heaviest rain likely won’t make it onshore. High temperatures cool off into the mid-60s with cloud cover and winds moving from southeast to north as the low progresses.

Sunday – a lingering chance for rain in the morning, followed by mostly cloudy conditions, but slightly warmer with high temperatures in the upper-60s.

Monday – small chance for showers in the afternoon, high temperatures again in the upper-60s with mostly cloudy skies.

 

Finally Warming Up – Drought Development Likely

The development of a Bermuda high in the 6-10 day range will result in above normal temperatures for much of the Northeast, as you see from the following charts from the Climate Prediction Center. While we’re all yearning for warmer temperatures with the cool spring we’ve had, the warmth and lack of rain will be conducive for the development of drought conditions this spring. We had just recovered from a persistent, though only moderate drought this winter, but we’re way behind in terms of precipitation averages for this time of year.

NYC Weather Update – Aug 31, 2015

A heat wave is on for the end of August, and will persist into the beginning of September. A hot, humid tropical airmass will be firmly in control through out the early and mid-week period before we get some heat relief late in the week. The hot temperatures and a lack of widespread precipitation may allow drought to redevelop in some parts of the region, and worsen over Long Island.

Rest of today – possibly the hottest day of the week, with temperatures in the low-mid 90s inland despite some cloud cover and uncomfortable humidity levels.

Tuesday – a weak backdoor cold front pushes through overnight, although no precipitation is anticipated due to insufficient instability. Tomorrow should see high temperatures in the lower 90s again under sunnier skies.

Wednesday – the heat wave continues with temperatures yet again expected to top out in the low-mid 90s with sunny skies. There could be a few isolated pop-up showers/thunderstorms late in the day with very limited coverage.

Thursday – expected to be the last day of the heat wave, sunny with high temperatures at or above 90.

NYC Weather Update – Jul 27, 2015

The heat will be the main weather story of this week, with temperatures of 90ºF or higher forecast to occur for a majority of the week. This heat does not appear to abate until at least this weekend. Incidentally, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, we’ve just hit 大暑 (literally “big heat”), a period of 2 weeks that are supposed to be the hottest of the summer. Fans of the heat, it is time for you to rejoice.

Rest of today – clouds this morning should slowly give way to more sun in the afternoon. The cloud cover now will help keep temperatures in the mid-80s.

Tuesday – a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, but otherwise hot with highs in the low-90s and a good amount of sunshine.

Wednesday – shaping up to be the hottest day of the week, with high temperatures in the mid-90s.

Thursday – with a cold front approaching from the west, there may be a few thunderstorms in the afternoon on Thursday which might grant some reprieve from the heat. Otherwise, sun and clouds with a high temperature in the low-90s.

NYC Weather Update – May 26, 2015

It certainly does feel as though Memorial Day 2015 has been the unofficial start of summer, given the warm and humid temperatures we’ve had from Sunday onwards. The warm, late-June like temperature trend continues through mid-week, with some chance for thunderstorms. Rain in any form would be most welcome, given that the region has been placed in a region of moderate drought as of this week.

Rest of today – the Bermuda high, more typical of mid-summer, brings us very warm and humid high temperatures in the mid-upper 80s, more than 15ºF above average for this time of year. If you like the heat, go out and enjoy it because we might see showers and thunderstorms both Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

Wednesday – a weak cold front approaches from the west, bringing with it a chance for showers and thunderstorms. The critical question for NYC will be how long organized storms can stay together as they enter into influence of cooler, maritime air nearer to the coast. Temperatures will remain warm in the low-mid 80s with clouds and some breaks of sun. Thursday – we get another shot at thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening, with highs likely topping out around 80 under mostly cloudy skies.

 

Moderate Drought for the Region Forecast to Persist

We’ve had an remarkable run of sunny, rain-free days, and above average temperatures for much of May (and indeed even going back a couple of months), and while that’s translated to pleasant weather for outdoor activities, it also has meant that we’ve entered into a stretch of moderate drought. We had a stretch of no rain for 23 consecutive days, earlier this month, which definitely didn’t help things. According to the USDA Drought Monitor, Central Park recorded 7.12″ of rain from March 1st through May 19th, which is only about 63% of average for this time of year.

While we are only in the lowest tier of drought and were just added to this category this week, these drought conditions bear watching. We hope to get some rain out of this week, and it looks like more storms are on the way this weekend, however, the drought forecast for our region looks to have the drought persist through this summer.

NYC Weather Update – Jul 21, 2014

This will be my last weather update for the next 3 weeks as I will be traveling to Costa Rica during that time.

Tuesday – things will heat up on Tuesday as the high pressure center responsible for the what has been a refreshingly cool and fair stretch of weather moves to the southeast. This will allow warm, tropical air to move back into the area, setting the stage for high temperatures to climb well into the mid-upper 80s under partly cloudy skies.

Wednesday – the hot weather will intensify Wednesday as temperatures near or top 90 with a noticeable increase in humidity as well. Warm, humid air will be sandwiched between the Bermuda high and an approaching cold front. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible later in the day Wednesday. Inland areas to the west of NYC are most likely to see precipitation Wednesday.

Thursday – the aforementioned cold front will move further east, giving the city itself its best chance of a soaking rain on Thursday. Given the humidity and amount of water available for storms Thursday, flash flooding is possible within the heaviest downpours, otherwise mostly cloudy with temperatures in the mid 80s. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few strong to severe thunderstorms popped up Thursday.

Friday – the cold front will clear our area and exit to the east, while cooler air filters down from Canada. High temperatures will return to the low 80s with mostly clear skies.

The Weekend – looks like the weekend itself will be another nice one, with high temperatures in the low 80s both Saturday and Sunday. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday leading into what appears to be a fairly active weather pattern for the beginning of next week.

 

NYC Weather Update – Jul 8, 2014

We had a nice couple days of seasonable, dry, and sunny weather this past weekend in the wake of Hurricane Arthur’s passage, but that came to an end yesterday and today. The high pressure that gave us the nice conditions moved to the southeast and out over the open waters of the Atlantic, merging with the semi-stationary Bermuda high. As you may know, this set up favors hot, humid temperatures all along the east coast, and we are no exception. Expect high temperatures to top out in the low-mid 90s today, with uncomfortably high humidity.

Wednesday – we may get some relief from the heat later today and overnight with a pre-frontal trough and scattered diurnal thunderstorms forming in the hot, unstable air. However, tomorrow will be more or less a repeat of today, with temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s and muggy conditions.

Thursday – The cold front above won’t actually reach us until late in the day Wednesday, but when it does hit us Thursday, it will bring some chance for scattered thunderstorms and a slight drop in temperatures back down into the mid 80s.

Friday – amazingly, our streak of great weekend weather (with the exception of Arthur) is set to continue. Once the cold front clears us Thursday, we’ll see high pressure build in from the west Friday, which means some cooler winds and lower humidity airmass from Canada moving in. Temperatures should be milder, in the low-mid 80s Friday through the weekend.

Our next shot at precipitation will be late Sunday into the beginning of next week.

NYC Weather Update + World Cup Weather! Jun 12, 2014

Two part update today – first to address NYC weather, and then to discuss the outlook for next week down in Brazil during the opening week of the FIFA World Cup.

Friday – the work week closes out with the wettest day so far with a warm front passing through tonight, and then a cold front following shortly thereafter tomorrow. This will translate to mostly cloudy skies, with a round of rain tonight, followed by a period of scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, and then ending with another round of heavier rain and thunderstorms Friday night. Temperatures will be much warmer than today after the passage of the warm front with highs in the low 80s.

Luckily for us, the cold front passes through quickly Friday and leads to a splendid stretch of weather beginning with a sunny, mild and pleasant Saturday and Sunday. High temperatures will be in the low 80s both days under clear skies. This is due to an area of high pressure building in from the west behind the cold front.

Warm Spell Next Week

This same high pressure area will track to the southeast during the weekend. By mid-week next week, the high pressure center will be offshore of the Southeastern US, and link up with the Bermuda High. As you may know, Bermuda Highs typically cause hot, humid weather in our region, and this will be no exception. Temperatures will steadily increase each day Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, such that by Wednesday, we’ll be looking at highs in the mid-upper 80s. This area of high pressure will also block any precipitation from impacting us until at least next Thursday into Friday when a low pressure system with a trailing cold front is forecast to pass through the Great Lakes.

World Cup Weather

The World Cup is upon us!!! With opening kickoff just a few minutes away, I thought it’d be useful to talk about weather down in the host country, Brazil. As you know, it’s currently autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, but you wouldn’t be able to tell based on the forecast high temperatures for most of the Brazilian cities with games going on next week. High temperatures will range from the upper 70s-upper 80s depending on where you are.

The highest temperatures will be in Manaus, which not surprisingly sits in the Amazon basin. That’s also the city where you can expect the highest likelihood of rain and thunderstorms. Most of the coastal Brazilian cities that are hosting games will have pleasant conditions and high temperatures in the low 80s this week. Fair weather should be the story as high pressure will tend to dominate this week.
