NYC Weather Update – Mar 27, 2017

Active weather pattern to start the week brings us multiple chances for rain. Things settle down mid-week, but another chance for rain comes up late week and into the weekend. Beneficial rains and the snow from the last Nor’easter has put a significant dent in drought conditions area wide. It looks like we’ve turned the corner legitimately towards spring with average to above-average temperatures expected for the foreseeable future.

Rest of today – rain tapering off by the early afternoon. Some clearing possible later. High temperatures in the mid-upper 50s.

Tuesday – mild, high temperatures around 60°F, slight chance for rain lingers throughout the day with a cold front approaching from the west.

Wednesday – rain is likely overnight Tuesday into Wednesday as this cold front moves through. On Wendesday itself, after the cold front pushes through, gradual improvement in weather conditions is expected with clouds breaking and a high in the mid-upper 50s.

Thursday – best day out of the week with high temperatures right around average in the low-50s and plenty of sunshine.

Temperature, Precipitation Trends and Drought Update

Over the course of the next week to week and a half, we’re expected to see average to slightly above average temperatures along with slightly above average rainfall. This bodes well for the overall drought situation which has seen marked improvement since the region received significant snowfall from the last Nor’easter and winter storm.

NYC Weather Update – Feb 20, 2017

This week will see a marked transition from seasonable high temperatures in the low-40s to a much warmer period mid-late week that will be reminiscent of this past weekend’s record-breaking warmth. The only blemish on this spring preview is a slight chance for rain overnight Tuesday. Looking ahead, it appears March will be far from a lamb this year with a few storms rolling our way.

Rest of today – mild and above average with temperatures in the mid-upper 40s. Clear skies overhead. This will continue overnight and allow for good radiational cooling leading to overnight lows in the low-30s.

Tuesday – seasonable with high temperatures in the low-40s under mostly sunny skies.

Wednesday – a warm up begins as a summer-like high pressure area sets up over Bermuda. This high pressure will induce a southwest flow ahead of a cold front to the west that will push warm air from the Southeast to our region. The result will be increasing clouds but high temperatures near 60°F.

Thursday – even warmer, with high temperatures reaching well into the mid-upper 60s with mostly sunny skies.

Warm Temperatures to Continue Through Weekend

I suppose Staten Island Chuck was right when he predicted a short winter, because it looks like above normal temperatures are expected through the end of this month. This weekend, look forward to more temperatures near 60ºF.

NYC Weekend Weather – Feb 17, 2017

This weekend will be characterized by well above normal temperatures and fair conditions. This warm trend looks to continue into next week, and perhaps beyond. Enjoy the warmth, and the early preview of spring!

Rest of today – normal high temperatures around 40°F with sunny skies.

Saturday – significantly warmer, sunny, with high temperatures in the mid-50s as a warm front pushes through.

Sunday – warm again, possibly warmer than Saturday with temperatures approaching 60°F. High pressure to the southwest will continue to pump warm air from the deep south our way.

Monday – cooler, though still above normal, with high temperature around 50°F and sunny.

Warm Trend to Continue

Climate Prediction Center points to a high likelihood for above normal temperatures in the next 6-10 days for much of the Eastern United States. Looking ahead, after a brief cool down to begin next week, temperatures go right back up into the mid-upper 50s by the middle of next week.

NYC Weather Update – Oct 31, 2016

There’s nothing scary with our weather this week in New York City. We’re looking at a cool start to the week, followed by a gradual warmup with a chance at rain towards the later part of this week. We received a couple rounds of drenching rains last week and yesterday, which will help the drought conditions somewhat, but it’s still not nearly enough to make up the deficit we’ve had this year.

Rest of today – clear, with a high in the low-50s after the passage of the cold front that brought us heavy rain yesterday. Trick or treating weather conditions should be just fine, though a bit on the cool side with lows dropping into upper-30s and around 40ºF tonight.

Tuesday – milder, sunny, with a high of around 60ºF in the city.

Wednesday – a warm front will push through early Wednesday. This will open the door to warmer air flowing around a high pressure center over the Southeast and an advancing cold front from the west. Temperatures will rise into the mid-60s with increasing clouds.

Thursday – even warmer still before this cold front above actually hits us. High temperatures expected to be in the upper-60s to near 70ºF. Some chances for showers later in the day into the overnight hours.

Drought Likely to Persist

Despite having received several inches of rain over the last couple of weeks, the seasonal outlook for our area continues to point to persistent moderate to severe drought. We hope to see some good snowfall like last winter that could bust the drought later on.

NYC Weather Update + Winter Outlook – Oct 24, 2016

Autumn weather is here in earnest. In a remarkable change from last week, we’ll see high temperatures below normal for most days. Temperatures will range 30ºF cooler than this time last week. As we look ahead towards the winter, there are mixed signals about whether this will be a cooler, warmer, or average winter.

Rest of today – sunny, breezy, with a high near 60ºF. Northwest winds around 15mph, gusting to 30mph.

Tuesday – mostly sunny, breezy again especially later with northwest winds again between 15-20mph. Cooler, with high temperatures in the mid-50s. With the wind, it will feel quite cool for this time of year.

Wednesday – winds should ease up a bit, but will be cool again with high temperatures potentially only in the low-50s.

Thursday – temperatures rise back into the mid-50s with the approach of a storm system from the west that should bring a chance for rain, increasing through the day.

Winter Outlook

Meteorologists are less confident that we’ll have a La Niña this coming winter, which makes the winter climate outlook more uncertain. There are indications that temperatures may be a bit milder overall. However, that doesn’t preclude the possibility of some serious cold spells also.

There are conflicting forecasts that call for a colder than normal winter also, which you can read about on Weather Underground. Unfortunately, there is no indication we’ll get above average precipitation, which would be welcomed considering most of the Northeast is still dealing with an increasingly serious drought.

NYC Weather Update – Jun 20, 2016

We couldn’t have asked for better weather this past weekend, and Sunday in particular was a real gem for all the fathers who had outdoor plans. The run of nice weather gets a couple interruptions this week for some much needed rain, with the first half of the week heating up before a cool down mid-week.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low-80s. Today also marks the first official day of summer, which begins at 6:34PM EDT. For the first time in 70 years, the summer solstice will also coincide with a full moon.

Tuesday – a cold front pushes through overnight into Tuesday. There could be some showers/thunderstorms in the early morning hours, but these are unlikely to linger much beyond daybreak. Once the frontal boundary clears, winds pick up inland from the west, ushering in a warmer, though less humid airmass. Temperatures should rise steadily into the upper-80s to near 90ºF in a couple spots under clearing and mostly sunny skies.

Wednesday – pleasant, sunny, with high temperatures in the mid-80s.

Thursday – the next chance at rain comes with a low pressure system moving during the afternoon hours Thursday. Uncertainty remains as to the exact track of this incoming storm system. A southerly track would result in less potential for severe weather/flash flooding, and this is the scenario that forecast models seem to suggest now. Either way, it will be a cooler day with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper-70s, with a chance for showers and thunderstorms later in the day into the overnight hours.

Friday – much improved conditions with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low-80s.

Drought Worsens, Likely to Persist this Summer

The continued lack of significant rainfall this Spring has led to increasingly dry soil. The US drought monitor now has some regions of the Northeast in an area of moderate drought. The outlook for the summer suggests that the drought will persist, without much improvement.

NYC Weather Update – May 10, 2016

What a difference a week makes in terms of the weather – we barely caught any sun last week, as we were dogged by several consecutive low pressure systems. This week, we’ve seen a shift in the jet stream and more high pressure in the picture, resulting in warmer temperatures and dry weather.

Rest of today – partly sunny with a small chance for showers later in the day and high temperatures in the mid-60s.

Wednesday – sunny, with high pressure in control, warm with temperatures in the low-mid 70s.

Thursday – another nice, sunny day, with high temperatures a shade cooler, in the low-70s.

Friday – the next chance for substantial precipitation comes along with a cold front arriving later in the day. Cloudy, with temperatures cooler in the mid-upper 60s.

Sunny but still below average

Temperatures will be much warmer than last week, but we’re still going to be missing the mark for average (around 70ºF) for the next few days. 610temp.new

NYC Weather Update – Apr 26, 2016

There is a potential for strong to severe thunderstorms today, especially for areas south and west of the city today. Stormy weather gives way to calmer, cooler conditions Wednesday before another round of rain moves in late Thursday. Cooler temperatures prevail in the short to medium term.

Rest of today – the Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of the region under a marginal to slight risk of severe weather today. These areas are largely confined to those south and west of the city. A frontal boundary is draped from west to east across the area, such that portions to the east will be in colder air north of the frontal boundary, while those areas to the west will be in a warmer area south of it. Any strong to severe thunderstorms will be confined to areas that see the warmest temperatures today, where the spread in high temperatures could be over 25ºF from eastern Long Island to Central New Jersey.

In the city, expect high temperatures in the upper-60s to low-70s with a potential for thunderstorms, some possibly with damaging winds and small hail. These storms will be coming in two rounds, one around 11AM this morning (radar returns are already showing this batch of weaker showers), and the second, stronger batch coming around 3PM. Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 10.19.47 AM Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 10.20.01 AM

Wednesday – temperatures cool off considerably in the wake of these storms. High temperatures will be around 60ºF tomorrow with sunny skies.

Thursday – another cool day with high temperatures in the upper-50s and increasing clouds along with an increasing chance of rain during the day into the overnight hours.

Friday – high temperatures in the upper-50s to around 60ºF with partly sunny skies.

Below Normal Temperature Trend to Continue – Rain Needed

An upcoming series of storm systems moving over the region will lead to colder air being pulled in behind them. This will result in below normal temperatures for this time of year throughout much of the next two weeks.

610temp.new 814temp.new

Due to a long stretch of dry weather, many portions of the NYC region have fallen behind normal precipitation levels for this period of the year by considerable margins. Hopefully, the rounds of rain we are forecast to receive coming up will help to prevent drought conditions from redeveloping in the area before this growing season starts in earnest.

NYC Weather Update – Apr 11, 2016

After a cold start to the first full month of spring, we’re finally turning the corner and headed into a gradual warming trend to end the month. This week looks good, with mostly dry weather except for Tuesday, and temperatures at or slightly above normal in the upper-50s to around 60ºF.

Rest of today – skies have been clearing up the past few hours, though there are more clouds to our west. However, no rain is expected to fall until much later in the overnight hours and temperatures should be pleasant in the mid-50s.

Tuesday – rain in the morning, cloudy and warmer with high temperatures around 60ºF.

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 12.44.13 PM

Wednesday – mostly sunny day with high temperatures again in the upper-50s to around 60ºF under the influence of a high pressure center.

Thursday – basically a copy of Wednesday, but perhaps a couple degrees warmer.

Friday – the streak of good weather continues, another nice day pretty much like Friday.

Warming Trend

Above normal temperatures are expected for almost the entire country, including the Northeast, for pretty much the remainder of the month.

NYC Weather Update – Mar 21, 2016

February 2016 resolutely smashed previous records for the largest deviation above normal temperatures for any given month (which was previously set in January 2016). Thus far, March has yielded temperatures more typical of late-May, and also two instances of late season accumulating snows. This week, the weather warms up again, and there’s certainly no snow on deck.

Rest of today – clouds have largely cleared out with the passage of last night’s coastal storm that left behind some marginal accumulations across the region, the highest totals occurring quite a ways east of the city, but capped at only about 3″. There will be no trace of the snow by this afternoon as temperatures warm into the upper-40s.

Tuesday – very similar to today, with high temperatures in the upper-40s and mostly sunny skies.

Wednesday – winds turn to the southwest ahead of an advancing frontal boundary that will pass late Thursday/Friday, allowing temperatures to surge into the low-60s with increasing clouds.

Thursday – tricky temperature forecast due to the timing of approach of the aforementioned frontal boundary. If that boundary is a bit slower than current forecasts or lifts further north, we could see temperatures well into the 60s. Temperatures should be quite mild in the mid-upper 50s even outside of this scenario.

Friday – the next chance at rain and possibly a couple of thunderstorms occurs late Thursday into Friday morning with the anticipated passage of a cold front. Despite the passage of this front, temperatures will still be well above average in the upper-50s.
