NYC Weather Update – Jan 30, 2017

As we open February, temperatures will be appropriately cold and seasonable for this time of year. We have a chance for some light snow accumulation Tuesday with a passing clipper system. Looking into the long-term, some forecast models are indicating the possibility of a couple coastal storms that could be snowmakers next week.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with high temperatures peaking in the mid-30. Steady northwest wind around 15mph will produce wind chills below freezing.

Tuesday – high again in the mid-30s, but with snow expected in particular in the afternoon hours with an advancing clipper system and cold front. Snow accumulations are not expected to exceed 1 inch at this time.

Wednesday – brief rebound in temperatures into the mid-40s, with skies beginning to clear during the day.

Thursday – temperatures drop back to seasonable levels in the mid-30s.

More Significant Snows Ahead?

Looking ahead at Monday after the Superbowl, there appears to be a chance for a more significant snowmaker in the form of a coastal low. The forecast on this will become more clear as the week draws to a close.

NYC Weekend Weather – Dec 15, 2016

Apologies for the lack of updates recently. Winter weather has come in full force a few days ahead of the actual Winter Solstice. We’ll see possibly record-tying or record-breaking cold Friday in some parts of the area, our first measurable snowfall in the city this season, all while temperatures swing about 30ºF from now through Sunday. The medium term shows a continuance of average to below-average temperatures in the upper-30s and low-40s.

Rest of today – we had some passing snow showers this morning, and there will be another chance for snow showers this afternoon. The main story will be the wind, cold temperatures, and low wind chills. A wind advisory is in effect for today with a high wind warning in place for tonight. Sustained winds of 20-30mph are expected, with wind gusts between 40mph to as high as 60mph possible later. Combined with high temperatures only in the mid-20s, this will result in wind chills of between 0-10ºF in the city.

Friday – slightly colder than today with highs in the mid-20s, with a very cold start to the morning as overnight lows drop into the teens. Winds will slowly abate through the course of the day as the high pressure center depicted above moves east over us, lessening the pressure gradient. Overnight Friday, a warm front approaches and brings the possibility for 1-2″ of snow.

Saturday – the snow will continue into the first half of Saturday with the possibility of 1-2″ additional inches of accumulation before temperatures warm and winds turn towards the southwest. There is some question as to whether some period of freezing rain will occur before a transition to all rain from south to north in the afternoon hours. High temperatures rebound nicely into the upper-40s in the wake of the warm front passing through.

Sunday – a cold front will follow the passage of the warm front mentioned above, but that shouldn’t happen until late Sunday. Ahead of that cold front passing, temperatures will continue to warm into the low-mid 50s as rain continues to fall. That snow won’t stick around long!

NYC Weather Update – Nov 29, 2016

It’s the tale of two very different weather regimes this week. Starting the week, we have mild, rainy conditions accompanying a couple storm systems. This rain is still desperately needed as a drought continues to grip the area. Later in the week, things dry out, but temperatures also move in a downward trend back below normal.

Rest of today – mild with a high temperature near 60°F, rainy, with rain moderate to heavy at times. Rain tapering off by about 7PM this evening.

Wednesdaay – a complex set of of frontal boundaries move through the area tomorrow in association with a low pressure developing over the Great Lakes. In terms of sensible weather, expect a brief pause from the rain early Wednesday, but another round of overrunning rain that could then lead to a line of stronger storms with gusty winds late in the day as the cold front pictured below pushes through. Mostly cloudy with high temperatures again around 60°F.

Thursday – becoming sunny with high temperatures still holding up in the upper-50s.

Friday – cooler with high temperatures dropping to around normal in the low-50s with sun and clouds.

Drought Still Not Abating

Despite plenty of rain recently, large deficits built up from earlier in the year are still hard to beat, with many areas still in a moderate to severe drought in the NYC region.

NYC Thanksgiving Weather Update – Nov 22, 2016

Winds finally abate after today. Temperatures rebound later this week, but remain below normal for the forecast period. There is a chance for rain on Thanksgiving Day, as well as Friday. Looking ahead into the first week of December, there could be a couple storms rolling our way.

Today – sunny, less windy, but still cold with temperatures again only in the low-40s. A good day for travel.

Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) – cloudy, warmer with a high near 50°F. There is a chance for rain, but that the timing of the rain favors the afternoon after the parade ends. What rain there might be will be light. Winds also will be light, so those balloons at the Macy’s Day Parade should have no problems.

Friday – rain chances persist, along with temperatures warming to near normal in the low-50s as warmer air flows in ahead of a cold front from the southwest.

Saturday – the frontal system affecting the area Thursday and Friday finally will clear the area. Showers may pop off early, but the skies should slowly clear as temperatures remain around normal in the low-50s.

NYC Weekend Weather – Nov 18, 2016

An extended period of well above normal temperatures comes to an abrupt end this weekend as a strong cold front pushes through overnight Saturday into Sunday. On the back side of this frontal boundary, temperatures will average around 15ºF lower than we’ve seen this week. If you like it mild, go out and enjoy this weather before Saturday!

Rest of today – sunny and mild with high temperatures in the low-60s.

Saturday – another mild day on tap with lots of sun and a high around 60ºF. Chances for rain increase into the overnight hours, at this point peaking around midnight. Winds will pick up first from the southeast ahead of the cold front, then to the west. Sustained winds of 15-20mph with gusts over 30mph are possible.

Sunday – rain chances taper off but winds remain in the 20-30mph with strong gusts up to 40mph. High temperatures will be significantly colder than we’ve gotten used to and below normal in the mid-40s. A tight pressure gradient sets up between the departing low and a high pressure center to the southwest, blasting us with cold Canadian air as a result.

Monday – clouds diminishing gradually, winds still pretty breezy, and a high only in the low-40s.

NYC Veterans Day Weekend Weather – Nov 10, 2016

After some needed rain yesterday, we move back into a pattern of dry weather that will be in place until at least mid-week next week. Temperatures will be the coldest this season on Saturday behind a cold front, then rebound to above normal for the remainder of the period.

Rest of today – clearing skies with temperatures dropping into the mid-40s overnight. Winds pick up from the northwest.

Friday (Veteran’s Day) – high temperatures in the upper-50s. Clouds increasing with an approaching cold front, but no rain is expected due to lack of enough moisture. Windy, with a northwest wind 15-25mph.

Saturday – overnight lows Friday will be the coldest yet for the city right above freezing. Temperatures do not rebound much Saturday even with lots of sun. Highs may not even hit 50ºF. Winds abate somewhat, but still in the 10-15mph range.

Sunday – this high pressure will slide towards the southeast by Sunday. Return flow around the western edge of the high pressure will shift winds more to the west/southwest allowing warmer air in and high temperatures around 60ºF.

NYC Weather Update – Oct 31, 2016

There’s nothing scary with our weather this week in New York City. We’re looking at a cool start to the week, followed by a gradual warmup with a chance at rain towards the later part of this week. We received a couple rounds of drenching rains last week and yesterday, which will help the drought conditions somewhat, but it’s still not nearly enough to make up the deficit we’ve had this year.

Rest of today – clear, with a high in the low-50s after the passage of the cold front that brought us heavy rain yesterday. Trick or treating weather conditions should be just fine, though a bit on the cool side with lows dropping into upper-30s and around 40ºF tonight.

Tuesday – milder, sunny, with a high of around 60ºF in the city.

Wednesday – a warm front will push through early Wednesday. This will open the door to warmer air flowing around a high pressure center over the Southeast and an advancing cold front from the west. Temperatures will rise into the mid-60s with increasing clouds.

Thursday – even warmer still before this cold front above actually hits us. High temperatures expected to be in the upper-60s to near 70ºF. Some chances for showers later in the day into the overnight hours.

Drought Likely to Persist

Despite having received several inches of rain over the last couple of weeks, the seasonal outlook for our area continues to point to persistent moderate to severe drought. We hope to see some good snowfall like last winter that could bust the drought later on.

NYC Weekend Weather – Oct 28, 2016

This weekend we will see a brief warmup in temperatures. Saturday will have the best weather, with another round of rain likely for later in the day Sunday. Temperatures dip back below normal Monday to start off next week.

Rest of today – it’ll be a mostly sunny day. However, a tight pressure gradient around the low pressure and storm system that brought us moderate to heavy rain yesterday will result in stiff winds from the northwest. Temperatures will be below normal in the upper-50s.

Saturday – a very pleasant day on tap with temperatures bouncing back nicely into the low-60s, not too much wind and mostly sunny skies.

Sunday – a cold front will be draped from west to east across the Northeast and push through late Sunday. Temperatures ahead of the frontal boundary will be quite mild in the low-70s with mostly cloudy skies. We get another chance at much needed rain with this frontal passage.

Monday – temperatures fall back into the upper-50s as a result of the cold front passing through Sunday. Mostly sunny skies though.

NYC Weekend Weather – Oct 20, 2016

This week has seen unprecedented and record breaking warmth for the middle of October, with temperatures that were more indicative of mid-June. But this weekend, we’re about to get a dose of reality as temperatures drop dramatically to below normal levels, in some cases 25ºF cooler than mid-week. We get some chances for much needed rain as well with some uncertainty due to the interaction of a possible tropical/subtropical system.

Rest of today – cloudy with a high around 70ºF. Chance of rain late in the day and into the overnight hours.

Friday – chances for rain increase throughout the day and especially in the evening and overnight hours. Interaction with a possible tropical/subtropical system complicates the forecast in terms of where the heaviest rain sets up. High temperatures in the mid-70s and mostly cloudy.

Saturday – the National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of disturbed weather off the Bahamas that they’re giving a 50% of becoming a named tropical/subtropical system in the next few days. Regardless of whether a named storm forms, this system is expected to merge with an approaching cold front Saturday. This would give the cold front an extra shot of energy and moisture, though it would appear that the bulk of this moisture and rain falls well north of the area. Behind this cold front, the pressure gradient tightens and cold air rushes in from Canada, resulting in a blustery, though sunny, day with high temperatures struggling to hit 60ºF and a brisk northwest wind.

Sunday – winds die down, and temperatures rebound to average levels in the low-60s under mostly sunny skies.

NYC Weather Update – Oct 11, 2016

We did end up getting rainier, windier weather last weekend than expected because of the lingering influence of Post-Tropical Storm Matthew as it got absorbed by a cold front. This cold front is what’s brought us the first real blast of autumn chill. This trend will reverse itself the next couple days. Cooler air returns for the weekend.

Rest of today – seasonable with highs in the mid-60s and mostly sunny skies.

Wednesday – warmer, with a cold front approaching from the west, warmer air will flow in from the south. This will allow temperatures to rise into the upper-60s under increasingly cloudy skies.

Thursday – a bit milder than Wednesday, with a possibility of temperatures reaching into the low-mid 70s. There is a slight chance for rain with the passage of the cold front, but this frontal passage looks in general to be a dry one.

Friday – colder air returns after the passage of the frontal boundary late Thursday. Temperatures return to seasonable levels in the low-60s under mostly sunny skies with overnight lows dipping to around 50ºF in the city and much cooler in the surrounding suburbs.

Saturday – another picture perfect autumn day with high temperatures in the low-60s and lots of sun.

Severe Drought Persists

We continue to suffer from a persistent and severe drought. We are more than 8″ below where we should be this time of year in terms of overall precipitation and the long term outlook does not call for any relief.
