This week ends with clouds and some small chance of rain, but we’re in for a real sweet stretch of pleasant conditions and warmer than average temperatures from Sunday into early next week. In fact, we could be hitting 80 by Tuesday ahead of a cold front that could bring some thunderstorms with it, before we cool back down into the low-70s, which is still above normal.
Friday – due to the influence of a weak area of low pressure to our south, we will be seeing generally cloudy skies, with some very slight chance for scattered showers in the southernmost portions of the region. Temperatures will be moderate by northeast winds circulating counterclockwise around the low pressure to our south, yielding high temperatures in the upper 50s to near 60, just a few degrees below normal.
Saturday – as the aforementioned low pressure system slides off to the east over the Atlantic, clouds should gradually decrease. Temperatures will also rebound somewhat to around normal with a high in the mid-60s. However, there could be just enough instability in the atmosphere to spark a couple scattered showers or thunderstorms.
Sunday – by this time, an area of high pressure will have developed over the Carolinas. This setup will favor the influx of a warm airmass from the Gulf of Mexico. Skies will clear, and temperatures will be noticeably warmer in the low 70s.
Monday – another gorgeous day to start the week, with sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid-70s (10º above normal). Don’t say I told you so, but if there were a day to skip work, this would be it.
Tuesday – although it will be even warmer Tuesday than it will be Monday, with highs possibly topping 80, it won’t be quite as pleasant since clouds will be building up ahead of a cold front that will bring our next chance at rain.
After a few winter-like nights last week, things are back on the mend in terms of temperature this week. Wednesday should be the best day of the week, with mild temperatures in the upper-60s and sunny skies. Wednesday will be bookended by the rest of the week, which won’t be quite as pleasant. But, it won’t be as cold as it has been the last week.
Rest of Today – skies will be variably cloudy during the rest of the afternoon, with a chance for rain showers. This is due to the influence of a low pressure system in the Gulf of Maine that is inducing some instability here, as well as allowing a cool, moist, Canadian maritime airmass to enter the area.
Tuesday – slightly better conditions than today with that low pressure exiting over the Atlantic. Skies should be mostly sunny with high temperatures in the mid-60s.
Wednesday – highlight of the week, featuring sunny skies and mild temperatures near 70.
Thursday – clouds return and temperatures fall back into the lower 60s in response to an approaching low pressure system from the Carolinas.
We’re finally getting a run at some spring-like weather with highs above normal to end the work week. We’ll get some of those April showers that we’re hoping will lead to a fantastic display of spring flowers later this month and May. A cold front passing through Saturday will knock temperatures back a notch, and then we enter into a period of active weather dictated by a stalled frontal boundary the first half of next week.
Today – warm and breezy, with a high near or just over 60. Clouds increasing late, as a warm front approaches from the south. A chance of showers develops overnight as this warm front continues moving towards us.
Friday – an even warmer day on tap, with that aforementioned warm front having passed through. We’ll be in the warm sector until later when a cold front moves through. High temperatures, despite rain and clouds, should still be able to top out in the lower 60s.
Saturday – with the cold front passing through, temperatures will drop on Saturday, back to about normal in the lower 50s. Partly sunny skies will slowly give way to more clear conditions.
Sunday – Sunday through Wednesday will be rather interesting. A frontal boundary is expected to push through Sunday, however, it is then expected to stall in our vicinity for a few days. As waves of low pressure ride along this stalled frontal boundary, the chance for showers persists through Wednesday.
A nice start to next week with above average high temperatures Monday and Tuesday in the mid-upper 50s along with those chances for rain.
Sunday night’s lows were the coldest of the year thus far, indicative of the coldest airmass to hit the area in recent memory. Again, according to climatology, the last time New York City itself hit a low of zero was in January 1994. Unfortunately, the cold snap does not show any signs of abating during the week, although the first half of the week will see daytime high temperatures in the mid-upper 20s as opposed to the teens. We’ll finish the week off back into the teens before a warmup to above freezing with an approaching storm system this weekend. Behind that – you guessed it, another round of arctic air and abnormally cold temperatures.
Rest of today – cold and overcast, with high temperatures not even getting to 20 in the city. Snow should begin falling overnight, with generally light accumulations by daybreak.
Tuesday – slightly warmer with high temperatures in the mid 20s, but also with a chance for snow as a storm system now dumping snow across a vast swath of the South passes well to the south of us. We could still end up picking up 2-5″ of snow in the city, with higher amounts along the south facing shores of Long Island and minimal accumulation north of I-84.
Wednesday – a weak cold front will pass through Wednesday, and may give us a small chance for light snow, otherwise, expecting cloudy skies with high temperatures in the mid-upper 20s.
Thursday – behind that cold front, we get our next shot of Arctic air, with overnight lows into Thursday struggling to hit 10 in the city, and zero and below in outlying inland areas. Daytime highs will only be in the mid-teens despite ample sun. Thursday night, we might get another shot at low temperatures hitting zero in the city, with lows below zero across most inland locations.
Friday – basically a repeat of Thursday, sunny but with brutally cold temperatures in the mid-teens.
Over the weekend – watching for the development of a storm system that could bring some wintry mix/freezing rain to the area, but finally give us a break from below freezing temperatures.
More Cold on Tap to End February
After the weekend storm, we get yet another reinforcing blast of Arctic air to end the month of February. Below, you’ll see the Climate Prediction Center‘s 8-14 day outlook spanning February 23 – March 1. We’re in a region with a greater than 60% probability of experiencing below average temperatures for this period.
We got a bit of a (cold) respite during the weekend from any precipitation, but all that is about to change in a big way tonight and into tomorrow. A complex storm system that is set to bring snow across a wide swath of the Midwest will be approaching the area tonight and into tomorrow. Various factors make this storm even harder to forecast than the Nor’easter last week, including a still uncertain storm track and a very tight temperature gradient leading to the potential for a mixed bag of all precipitation types in the NYC region.
Impacts
This storm is set to make Monday a downright nasty day to be out. Snow is forecast to begin falling tonight, with areas to the north of the city expected to pick up the most snow through this storm. During the AM rush, temperatures are expected to rise just enough in the lower atmosphere to allow for the possibility of sleet, ice pellets, and a period of freezing rain along the coast near the city, with rain possible further east in Long Island. Then, to close out the day, temperatures will drop rapidly below freezing, such that any slush or melted snow or wet surfaces could flash freeze. Because the temperature gradient is so tightly packed, it will again literally be a matter of miles between a spot that picks up mostly snow and perhaps 8″+, and another location that picks up almost no snow, but gets a significant coating of ice.
Below are some probabilistic forecast graphics that will give you a good sense of the degree of uncertainty within this storm forecast. First, with respect to snowfall totals over the next 48 hours.

In the snowfall probability maps, you can see just how tightly packed the different bands of probability for snowfall are. A matter of 50 miles means the difference between being in an area of 40%-50% probability of receiving more than 4″ of snow, and an area with a greater than 80% chance of receiving the same total.
Timing
Snow will begin to fall later this evening and pick up in intensity overnight. Depending on the area you’re living in, you could see between 3″-8″ overnight, with the highest totals most likely north of the city, and the lowest totals along the coast and in eastern Long Island. Around the morning rush, areas along the coast and eastern Long Island should begin to see a transition from snow to freezing rain, or some type of wintry mix of ice pellets and sleet. Some parts along the coast may even see a changeover from rain/snow to plain rain. In the afternoon, temperatures will drop quickly below freezing, allowing for flash freezing of slush and other wet surfaces. Winds will begin from the east initially before turning northeast and then north through the day.
Why the Uncertainty?
The reason behind the complexity of this storm with respect to precipitation types, uncertainty of total snowfall amounts, rests with storm’s track and the dynamics in the lower atmosphere accompanying this storm. This storm, unlike a Nor’easter, has its genesis over the Central Plains. However, as it approaches the coast, it will still be able to pick up a good amount of moisture off the ocean and from points south.
Recalling that air around a low pressure center in the northern hemisphere in a flows in a counterclockwise motion, you can better understand what is going on here. The low pressure center is forecast to pass just to our south. To the north of the storm center, colder air will dominate, since the cyclonic flow would be pulling air from north to south. Meanwhile, on the south side of the storm center, warmer air is being wrapped into the storm from the south and east. This onshore flow bringing relatively warmer air in close proximity to colder (sub-freezing) air is the reason why there is such a dramatic range in forecast snowfall totals across the area, and also the reason why there is a possibility for a range of different precipitation types.
Above is a forecast map that shows the forecast position and track of the storm. The colored points represent the individual forecast ensemble members (different forecast models with slightly different inputs) predictions for the storm. Notice that there is still a nontrivial spread between these ensemble members. You may also observe that they seem to cluster to the north of the official forecast track (the black line). Indeed, forecasters have been making slight northward adjustments in response to this trend. Should this bear out, and the low pressure center does move a bit further north, we would end up with less snow, more chance for mixed precipitation and even rain. On the opposite end, if the storm track deviates south, we would get more snow, and less chance for mixed precipitation. A very tricky forecast indeed!
The details are starting to come together for tomorrow’s Nor’easter. Over the past day, forecast models have been pointing to a faster moving system, such that the onset of precipitation is expected to begin overnight tonight, with the bulk of the precipitation ending by early afternoon tomorrow. This storm is expected to throw a little bit of everything our way tomorrow, making for a nasty day overall, with snow changing over to freezing rain or sleet, then perhaps a period of plain rain, followed by a possibility of a rain snow mix.
What to Expect
Snow, moderate to heavy at times, beginning overnight tonight. Winds picking up from southeast, then eventually moving to the northeast and north during the day Saturday. Snow transitioning to a period of possibly freezing rain or sleet during the morning hours, then a period of rain around midday and a possible rain/snow mix towards late afternoon before precipitation gradually tapers off later in the evening. High temperature right around or slightly above freezing.
Forecast Storm Track
Forecast models are in generally good agreement that the center of this Nor’easter will be passing just inside the 40ºN 70ºW benchmark sometime in the late afternoon Saturday (approx 4-5PM).
Without a high pressure center to the north supplying cold air to the area, this setup will allow for enough warm, moist air to circulate around the eastern side of the low pressure center to give us a mix of precipitation throughout the day. The extent to which snow can be sustained will be strongly dependent on dynamical cooling, and how quickly cold air can be pulled in on the western side of the low pressure center.
Snowfall Forecast
As you can see below, the probability of more than 4″ of snow is quite low for coastal areas, especially Eastern Long Island, where mainly rain is forecast. The heaviest totals (no more than 5″, most likely) will be concentrated well north and east of NYC where temperatures are expected to be cold enough to sustain all snow for longer. Because the forward speed of the storm is now predicted to be faster, the chances of NYC getting any significant snowfall (even 2″) is considerably lower. Most of the city is in a swath of between 30-40% chance of getting more than 2″ of snow.
Ice Accumulation
The probability of us receiving a trace, but a measurable amount of ice from freezing rain is quite a bit higher than the probability of receiving snow, with most of the city in the 40-60% range.
Sunday – the storm will be long gone by Sunday, and we’re expecting to hit highs in the mid-upper 30s.
Monday – there is some potential for a round of all snow on Monday, but forecast models have not been in good consensus on how this will play out. A clipper system is expected to pass through, though it is unclear whether this system will spawn a secondary low offshore. In the latter case, we could see some significant snow, while if it’s just a clipper, we probably won’t see more than a couple inches.
All eyes turn towards the imminent Nor’easter that will be bringing significant winter weather impacts to the NYC metro region. Many variables remain unresolved that could affect the eventual outcome, but at this time, it looks like we’re in for a nasty combination of freezing rain, rain, and snow during the day Saturday. At present, forecasts call for somewhere between 2-4″ of snow in the city along with some ice accumulation. Precipitation should fall as all snow north and west of NYC, however, overall accumulation should be slightly less than in the city itself since the most intense precipitation will remain near coastal areas.
Friday – we get a pleasant, sunny, and slightly above average day with high temperatures in the mid-upper 30s.
Saturday – a tricky forecast for Saturday. What we know for sure, with different forecast models in relatively close agreement, is that an area of low pressure now forming over the Texas Gulf Coast will track over the Southeast, and then offshore of North Carolina by Friday night/early Saturday. Once the low moves offshore, it will rapidly intensify, and then track right on or very close to the 40ºN 70ºW benchmark by Saturday afternoon/early evening.
The uncertain part about this scenario has to do with the thermal profiles in place. With no high pressure over us or to the north pumping in cold Canadian air, the depth of cold (sub-freezing) air will be relatively shallow.
As the Nor’easter approaches us, the cyclonic flow around its center will wrap in some relatively warmer air in from the ocean and points south. This makes for a complicated picture – with warmer air aloft (see animation below) during parts of the day, and below freezing air nearer to the surface throughout points in the day, the recipe is set for at least some periods of freezing rain – precipitation that falls as rain, and then freezes on contact with a sub-freezing surface.
During the middle portion of the day, temperatures should be warm enough at the surface to support plain rain for some time, before transitioning back into freezing rain, rain/snow mix, perhaps with a period of all snow before tapering off Saturday evening.
Deviations in the storm track to the east would result in more cold air being pulled in from the action of northerly winds on the western side of the low pressure center’s cyclonic flow (less freezing rain/rain, more snow), while deviations of the track west would result in warmer air being in place (less snow, more rain). So, even a slight adjustment in the storm track could alter the thermal profiles, and subsequently what kind of precipitation we see.
Sunday – temperatures overnight Saturday will be below freezing, which would allow anything that fell and melted to refreeze. Things do clear up Sunday, with highs about average in the mid-30s, and with clouds diminishing.
Monday – there is a chance for yet another round of mainly snow, potentially heavy, as another coastal storm is possible. Highs will be close to the freezing mark, making this an all snow event if it should pan out.
We end this week off with a windy day Friday, followed by an intrusion of cold air on Saturday before a warmup Sunday that should be accompanied by some rain during the day, then possibly a mix of rain and snow Sunday night. Some chance of snow persists into early Monday.
Friday – a cold front dropping from Canada will tighten the pressure gradient ahead of it, bringing with it breezy west-northwest winds between 15-25mph during the day tomorrow. High temperatures will be about normal in the upper 30s, but with wind chill values only in the 20s.
Saturday – subsequent to the passage of that cold front, we get another shot of cold, arctic air, with temperatures on Saturday struggling to even reach 30 in the city, and only in the 20s elsewhere.
Sunday – a low pressure system will be moving steadily northeast into Quebec by Sunday. This storm system will have a trailing cold front as well as a preceding warm front. We should enter the warm sector behind the warm front passing over us Sunday. This will allow for temperatures to rise into the mid-40s (possibly higher in a few spots). There will be a transfer of energy to a secondary low pressure center which is forecast to form off the Mid-Atlantic coast. This will result in the chance for us to get a few periods of moderate-heavy rain on Sunday, especially in the afternoon hours. As the coastal low moves off to the northeast, rain should taper down during the overnight hours into Monday, and temperatures will be cold enough to support a chance of rain/snow mix.
Monday – snow showers should end early Monday. High temperatures will be about average for this time of year, in the upper 30s.
This weekend will feature about normal temperatures for mid-December, with a small chance of rain/snow on Sunday. Relatively quiet weather during the weekend will give way to an active weather pattern for the first half of next week, with a robust storm system arriving Christmas Eve (all rain, sadly, so no white Christmas for us here in NYC).
Saturday – high pressure currently in control of the weather will erode as it moves east. Clouds cover will increase with high temperatures around 40.
Sunday – easterly winds off the ocean in the wake of high pressure centered over Atlantic Canada will bring some slight chance for precipitation. The lower atmosphere is fairly dry, and is not primed with moisture for precipitation. If precipitation does materialize, temperature profiles are low enough that some snow flakes could be seen, but the overall impact will be negligible. High temperatures will be in the low 40s with cloudy skies.
Monday – a significant storm system will be approaching our region from the Central Plains. Forecast models point to a primary low pressure center over the interior of the country while a secondary low forms along the coast. Ahead of this storm system, some scattered showers could pass over the area Monday. Otherwise, expect a mostly cloudy day with high temperatures in the mid-40s.
Tuesday – coverage of precipitation will increase on Tuesday as that secondary low pressure center draws closer to the area. Warmer, marine air will be in place before a warm front passes over. This should ensure that temperature profiles remain warm enough to preclude the possibility of snow. Temperatures may rise to as high as the 50 degree mark Tuesday.
This early-mid week storm will cause some travel headaches for Christmas, but fortunately, it does appear the majority of precipitation will be in the form of rain.
Weather conditions will gradually deteriorate through the course of the day today as an approaching storm system draws closer to our area. Cloud coverage, scattered showers, and possible thunderstorms associated with a warm front should increase in coverage during the course of the day. High temperatures should be on the mild side in the mid-70s.
Thursday – as of now, the National Weather Service calls for the aforementioned warm front to approach but not clear our region by Thursday morning. As such, cooler southeast and easterly winds off the ocean will keep temperatures on the cool side with highs only in the mid-upper 60s. There will be a persistence chance for showers and thunderstorms as multiple impulses of energy ride up and along the frontal system, with a break probably occurring between early Thursday morning and later Thursday afternoon/evening.
Friday – in NYC, although the warm and cold fronts associated with this latest storm are forecast to have cleared through the area by Friday, an upper level low situated over the Canadian Maritimes will continue to allow impulses of energy (shortwaves) to rotate into our area providing the spark for a continued chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially Friday afternoon and evening. This upper low will be slow to move east due to a strong blocking “omega” high pressure center located over the central North Atlantic. High temperatures will again be around the upper 60s.
For Oberlin, conditions will begin to improve earlier with the chance of rain ending by Thursday, partly sunny skies Friday with gradual clearing and highs in the upper 60s.
Saturday – we’ll see an tenuous area of high pressure trying to build in from our west. However, there may still be a marginal chance of PM showers. Otherwise, expect gradually improving conditions with temperatures climbing back up into the low 70s.
Sunday and Monday (Memorial Day) – These will be the best days of the weekend with dry, mostly sunny, and warm conditions. High temperatures will continue to climb into the mid-upper 70s Sunday and possibly topping 80 Monday (this applies to both Oberlin and NYC). Next chance at rain will be Tuesday.
A New and Spectacular May Meteor Shower? – About Comet 209P/LINEAR & Camelopardalis
A friend of mine brought to my attention that a newly discovered and possibly brilliant meteor shower is forecast to take place in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 24th.
In brief, Earth is forecast to pass through the debris trail of a comet “Comet 209P/LINEAR” (discovered in 2004) during the overnight hours Friday into Saturday. Researchers are forecasting that the debris trail Earth passes through is one that has accumulated dust from as early as 1800 to 1924. As such, expectations are that we could see about an average of 200-400 meteors an hour (some estimates call for a meteor storm of 1000 meteors an hour!), i.e. between about 3-7 meteors per minute. Furthermore, the setup for this event is such that Southern Canada and the East Coast of the U.S. are ideally positioned to view this event. In the image below, the red line represents the forecast position of the radiant line (point from which meteors appear to emanate and where you would see the highest number of meteors), note that this line runs almost direct over Washington DC. Also, notice that the moon is in waxing gibbous phase, reducing its potential to overpower the meteor shower.
Timing and Visibility
The forecast zenith of this meteor shower is between 2AM-4AM Eastern Daylight Savings Time on Saturday, May 24th. Right now, the forecast for this time window calls for mostly cloudy skies over NYC as well as points east and north (i.e. New England). Partly cloudy skies are forecast the points further south and west (i.e. along the Jersey Shore, Washington DC/Northern, Eastern Virginia, Western Pennsylvania), with the best viewing conditions being in the DC metro area and Eastern Virginia where mostly clear skies are forecast. A word of caution: cloud cover forecasts even this close to the day of are notoriously difficult to pin down due to the fact that even small changes in initial conditions can lead to large shifts in a forecast. However, with high pressure building over the east coast throughout the course of the weekend, we should have generally good chances to view this shower.
My recommendation is that you go check this out in an area with minimal light pollution if you can. I think we’re in for a what I hope will be a good show!
Where to Look
The radiant point for this forecast meteor shower will be situated in the relatively obscure constellation Camelopardalis (named by the Romans for a hybrid animal that looks like both a camel and leopard, now known as a giraffe). As you’ll see below, this constellation is located slightly below the North Star (Polaris), and a bit to the right of the Big Dipper.
