NYC MLK Jr. Weekend Weather – Jan 18, 2019

The dusting of snow we got last night into today is just a small preview of what lies ahead this weekend. A major storm, that first brought heavy rain to the west coast, has been tracking across the nation and will impact the region late Saturday through Sunday with potentially a mixed bag of everything from snow, sleet, freezing rain, rain, urban street flooding, coastal flooding, and strong winds that could result in power outages and tree damage (esp. if ice accumulates). Behind this storm, the coldest air of the new year surges in, bringing a bitterly cold start to next week. I’ll post an in-depth forecast of the incoming winter storm tomorrow.

Rest of today – the veritable calm before the storm. High pressure briefly establishes itself behind the weaker disturbance that brought us light snow overnight. Skies slowly becoming partly cloudy. High temperatures in the low-40s. Overnight lows colder around 30°F.

Saturday – should start off as a decent day with partly cloudy skies. Cloud cover increases through the day, and snow starts to spread from southwest to northeast during the late afternoon hours. High temperatures in the mid-30s. Overnight lows right around freezing will critically impact how much snow accumulation we get before what is widely expected to be a transition over to wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain, then finally bouts of heavy rain leading into Sunday. If a warmer scenario plays out, we’ll get less snow and ice, and more rain. Various forecast sources call for between 1-4″ of snow and sleet accumulations, with up to as much as 0.10″ of ice.

Sunday – high temperatures will continue to play a pivotal role Sunday in determining precipitation type. Some forecast sources suggest colder high temperatures in the mid-30s, while others remain warmer, in the upper-30s to even 40°F. There is broad agreement that the day starts off with plain rain but then transitions back to wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and finally snow. The differences in high temperature will be pivotal to the timing of this transition, with a warmer scenario keeping things all rain longer. As the center of the low responsible for the storm moves off to the north and east, it will continue intensifying and the pressure gradient around it will increase quite dramatically. Robust northwest winds are expected to develop, rapidly advecting cold, Arctic air into the area. The intensity of this cold advection will govern how quickly temperatures start to plummet during the second half of Sunday. It would appear that temperatures will be well below freezing by the late afternoon hours. This prompts concerns for a flash freeze of any standing water or untreated surfaces, leading to dangerous travel conditions. Temperatures will continue dropping overnight Sunday, with overnight lows going into Monday only around 10°F. Overall, this forecast shapes up to be a slushy mess, with a layer of snow coated by ice and sleet, melted by rain, but then re-frozen with an additional light layer of sleet and ice before all is said and done.

Monday (MLK Day) – if you have the day off, count yourself lucky, because this is shaping up to be a brutally cold day where temperatures topping out in the upper-teens despite ample sun. Continued windy conditions will produce wind chill values below zero. The bitter cold continues into Tuesday morning with overnight lows again in the low-teens.

NYC Detailed Forecast for Sunday Dec 23, 2018

On Friday, I forecast that Sunday and Monday would be mostly sunny and that we wouldn’t see any precipitation on either day. Updated forecast data shows that there is potential for some light mixed precipitation overnight Sunday into Monday. Below, I’ll provide a detailed forecast update for Sunday

My Forecast
High: 42ºF | Low: 33ºF | Max sustained winds: 25 mph | Total precipitation: 0.02″ – verification for temperatures and precipitation will come from METAR data for the period between 1AM Saturday and 1AM Sunday (06Z Sunday to 06Z Monday). Wind speed verification will draw on the daily climate summary from the National Weather Service.

Verification

High: 44ºF | Low: 36ºF | Max sustained winds: 24 mph | Total precipitation: 0.00″ – this was a decent forecast in terms of wind speed, and total precipitation. Precipitation didn’t start falling until late in the forecast period, so it ended up being a good call to hedge down below some of the more aggressive model output that suggested earlier/heavier precipitation. Layer mean wind analysis aided my forecast, though again, noting a possible small surface inversion in the NAM forecast sounding led me to make a wise decision to hedge down on max sustained winds. On temperatures, the overnight lows going into Sunday ended up being on the warmer side of the forecast envelope. Here, I mixing and downsloping played a bigger role than I anticipated.

Synoptic Set Up (The Big Picture)

An occluded low pressure center tracking over the Great Lakes will bring a weak cold front through the area Sunday night into Monday. Above the surface, a limiting factor will be the lack of deep moisture or strong winds at the 850 mb level. At the 500 mb level, a negatively tilted shortwave trough will supply good positive vorticity and divergence. However, there isn’t a clear signal for favorable entrance/exit regions of a jet streak at the 300 mb level to provide additional lift.

High Temperature

MOS forecasts show high temperatures Sunday in the mid-40s, with NAM (North American Model) coming in at 45ºF and GFS (Global Forecast System) pointing to 46ºF. NBM (National Blend of Models) – a consensus based forecast model, showed cooler highs at 42ºF. I tend to side with high temperatures on the cooler side due to persistent low overcast clouds during much of the day. Low overcast clouds are a known bias for statistical forecast models like NAM and GFS because they can effectively block out solar radiation, keeping things cooler than otherwise expected.

Low Temperature

The same MOS data above has lows on Saturday of 33ºF for NAM, 34ºF for GFS and 32ºF for NBM. I’ve gone with the middle of the road, in line with NAM at 33ºF because despite relatively clear skies overnight, strong winds are forecast to be blowing from the west to west-northwest, resulting in some downsloping and staving off any radiational cooling.

Max Sustained Winds

Overnight, forecast soundings indicate the presence of a well-mixed near surface layer. A well-mixed layer allows for faster winds aloft to transfer down to the surface relatively efficiently, and as such, the layer mean wind method can be applied to forecast maximum sustained winds in these cases. We can calculate layer mean by averaging wind speeds at every pressure level within the well-mixed layer shown in forecast soundings that are available in forecast model output. Performing a layer mean wind analysis for NAM and GFS produces an average of about 28 mph. However, noticing that there is a possibility for a small surface based inversion in the NAM forecast sounding, I’ve cut this down to 25 mph. In the chart below, the layer mean wind ends up being 26.71 knots (31 mph).

Total Precipitation

An approaching cold front will provide convergence and lift at the surface. However, at the 850 mb level, conditions look pretty dry through much of the day Sunday. 500 mb level divergence and lift looks decent, but the 300 mb level support doesn’t look great. Precipitation, if it occurs, won’t happen until the overnight hours going into Monday, and if it does happen, signs point to no more than a light event. I’m forecasting 0.02″, or just a trace of precipitation by 1AM Monday. Temperature profiles aloft support snow, though it appears that near the surface, temperatures will be above freezing, so it’s more likely that we’ll see a mix of rain and snow.

By 1AM Sunday, the atmosphere starts to become saturated to basically the surface, indicating ongoing precipitation. Most of the precipitation looks to fall in a zone of the atmosphere that’s below freezing, but temperatures at the surface are above freezing.


WxChallenge Philadelphia, PA Climatology – Nov 4, 2018

As part of the WxChallenge competition and Penn State University World Campus’ METEO 410 capstone course on weather forecasting, we are required to write up climatologies for cities that we will be forecasting for during the competition. I thought I would share the latest one I put together for Philadelphia, PA, which will be our forecast city for the next 2 weeks in the competition.

Climatology for Philadelphia, PA (KPHL)

Time Period: November 6-November 16

Topography and Geography

Local Time Zone: Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5)

Station Elevation: 10 feet above sea level.

Station Location: Philadelphia International Airport (KPHL) lies on the north bank of the Delaware River, 6.75 miles southwest of City Hall in downtown Philadelphia.

Important Topographical Features: Philadelphia is located in the southeasternmost corner of Pennsylvania, along the border with New Jersey to the east defined by the Delaware River. Philadelphia lies along the Fall Line, and there are rolling hills oriented southwest-northeast immediately west and north of the city. These hills have elevations of 200-500 feet. The Appalachian Mountains are further north and west, though many of these can be characterized more as narrow ridges. The elevations of these ridges range from 1000-1500 feet. East of the city are lowlands of the coastal plain in New Jersey. Although KPHL isn’t directly on the coastline, there are significant bodies of water within 55 miles of the site, including Chesapeake Bay to the southwest, Delaware Bay to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast and east. Lastly, although not technically a topographical feature, the city of Philadelphia is a sizable urban agglomeration that can have effects on local microclimates via differential heating (urban heat island effect).

Winds

Wind Roses:

Frequency (percentage) of the single most common wind direction: West-northwest, occurring around 11.5% of the time.

Directions that are most and least common: Most common wind directions: southwest (~10.25%), west (~10%), northwest (~9.5%), west-southwest (~8.75%). Least common wind directions: southeast (2.5%), east-southeast (~2.75%), south-southeast (3%).

Direction(s) most likely to produce the fastest winds: west-northwest, and northwest have the highest likelihood of producing winds in excess of 21.5 knots. Due west is not far behind either.

Direction(s) least likely to produce the fastest winds: The least common wind directions (east-southeast, southeast, and south-southeast) also are least likely to produce winds exceeding 16.5 knots. Among these, southeast winds have the lowest frequency of producing winds in excess of 16.5 knots.

Impacts of wind direction on local weather: Winds from the westerly-northerly directions flowing towards KPHL would all experience some degree of downsloping (not particularly strong), as they flow over and down the higher terrain in these regions as discussed in the section on topography. Southwesterly-easterly winds all have the potential to transport moisture into the KPHL area, as they would flow over Chesapeake Bay (southwest), Delaware Bay (south), and the Atlantic Ocean (southeast-east). Southwest winds are quite common – the southerly-easterly winds are significantly less common, but still occur collectively about 17% of the time. The LCD mentions both the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean as moderating influences, as winds from the former warm via downsloping; and winds from the advect cooler marine air in the warm season, and milder air in the cold season.

While northeasterly are generally uncommon, east-northeast winds are somewhat more frequent, occurring about 6.5% of the time. Winds from these directions are noteworthy for a couple impacts. First, when KPHL lies north of a deepening coastal low, these winds can enhance moisture transport from the Atlantic Ocean while also possibly bringing milder air from the ocean when the sea surface temperatures exceed surface temperatures during winter. Second, when a high pressure center approaches KPHL from the west, these winds can bring result in cold air damming as they would eventually pool cooler air at the base of higher terrain west of KPHL before turning south. This scenario would bring about cooler temperatures than otherwise expected. Though less of a concern during the cold season, there could be scenarios in which a strong enough sea breeze could penetrate far enough inland during the warm season to suppress temperatures at KPHL. On the other hand, the urban heat island effect induced by the city of Philadelphia should have year-round impacts in terms of generating an inbound wind from outlying suburbs towards the city center (which KPHL is very close to), while also resulting in warmer temperatures than surrounding areas.

NYC Weather Update – Weekend Nor’easter – Oct 26, 2018

I haven’t had time to post about the current week’s WxChallenge forecasts for Caribou, ME, which I’ll have a follow up post about Saturday or Sunday to go over my results. Instead, this week, I’m going to put the same forecast skills I’ve been applying to the upcoming nor’easter that’s going to impact NYC Saturday. I’ll provide a deterministic (exact number) forecast for high temperature, low temperature, maximum sustained wind speed, and total accumulated precipitation for the period starting 2AM Saturday and ending 2AM Sunday, with a less exact forecast for the rest of the weekend. In my later follow up post, I’ll verify my results and see just how close I got. For purposes of verification, my forecast will be for LGA. If you’re only reading this summary, just know that Saturday will be a windy, raw, rainy day, but that conditions will improve as the day goes on.

Friday – partly sunny skies with high temperatures in the low-50s. Light winds from the south-southeast.

Saturday – High temperature: 54°F. Low: 48°F. Maximum sustained winds (2-minute averaged): 34.5 mph from the east-northeast. Total precipitation: 1.25″. The bulk of the rain should end by the afternoon hours.

Sunday – mostly cloudy, high temperatures in the upper-50s with return flow from the west downsloping into the area.

Forecast Discussion

The nor’easter that’s coming to us this weekend has tropical origins as the remnants of Hurricane Willa, which originated in the Eastern Pacific and made landfall in Mexico as an intense Category 3 storm. This means that it will be able to tap to tropical moisture, bringing the potential for a heavy rainfall event. At the surface, a low pressure center will be intensifying as it slides up along the Mid-Atlantic coast. At the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, the set up is favorable for robust divergence, which should result in to strong surface convergence and lift. At the 850 mb level, there are indications of a strong low-level jet with winds as high as 50 knots from the east to east-northeast during the Saturday morning hours ahead of the warm front attached to the nor’easter. This would enable highly efficient moisture transport and convergence in our area. The net result of this should be periods of heavy rain. This is what justifies rainfall totals over an inch, though because of the relatively fast forward speed of this storm, I don’t believe that totals above 1.50″ are likely.

These aren’t pictured below, but MOS (model output statistics), and forecast plumes (ensembles of many different iterations of the same forecast model) probabilities suggest a consensus range of 1.15″-1.24″. Short Range Ensemble Forecast (SREF) probabilities show a greater than 90% chance for rainfall totals greater than or equal to 0.50″, 70-90% chance of totals greater than or equal to 1.00″, but very low chances of totals exceed 2.00″. The record rainfall for Saturday at LGA is 1.76″, though there are higher record totals surrounding this date, so this record isn’t what we’d call particularly strong.

On the temperature front, the trajectory of the onshore flow accompanying this storm actually brings it over Atlantic waters that are warmer than the air temperatures have been this week. This should bring warmer air into the area, however, because it will also be raining and cloudy, evaporational cooling will be a concern (as it rains, some of the moisture from raindrops will evaporate, which takes heat input to achieve, lowering surrounding temperatures), and that will likely knock temperatures down a bit. Overnight lows should end up being fairly mild in comparison to previous nights because of cloud cover and the aforementioned winds over warmer waters.

The wind speeds should be quite strong tomorrow. MOS is showing winds in the 24-26 knot range. However, given that 850 mb winds will be even strong, in the 50 knot range, and it will be precipitating, meaning downward transfer of momentum by raindrops should mix some of these stronger winds to the surface, which is why I think sustained winds could be as high as 35 mph at some point in the day at LGA (which is exposed near open water, so there’s less of an impact from friction over the land). I think gusts could easily top 40-45 mph tomorrow during the most intense rain squalls.

Without getting too technical, positive vorticity is related to divergence aloft, which helps aid upwards motion (lift). Strong upwards motion can lead to clouds and precipitation.

Shaded areas indicate strong winds at the 300 mb level. These are referred to as jet streaks. Our region is forecast to lie within the left exit region of a jet streak, an area that favors divergence and enhanced upwards motion/lift

Not surprisingly, the SREF probability forecast shows a 70-90% probability of omega (a quantitative measure of lift) exceeding -9 microbars/sec, which is considered quite strong

Update: Verification

According to the KLGA Daily Climatological Report showed the following for Saturday, October 27, 2018:

High Temperature: 53°F

Low Temperature: 45°F

Max Wind: 41 mph

Max Gust: 50 mph

Total QPF (this is taken from METAR data): 0.98″

I’ll attempt to do a post-mortem on the winds and QPF forecast where I missed pretty significantly later in the week.

WxChallenge for Omaha, Nebraska (KOMA) | Oct 16-19

Last Week’s Results

Tough week last week, with the major forecast bust I had on precipitation for Oct 9 for Omaha, plus generally underwhelming performances on temperatures the remainder of the week. Since I did pretty well the on the first city, and am better this week, my cumulative rank hasn’t gone down too much and I’m sitting at #263 nationwide (out of 1500) as of this writing.

Verifications

Below are the verified readings for each metric we were asked to forecast during last week, and a column showing error points I was assessed.

Post-Mortem

Day 1: Major bust across the board. Was off by more 5 degrees or more on both the high and low. This made up about half of the error points. The rest came from being off on max precipitation by more than 1.20”. MOS was considerably off the mark with temperatures – though NAM was closer. This was all due to the fact that a stationary frontal boundary never made it close enough to KOMA to realize warmer temperatures, and heavier precip. The axis of the 850 mb LLJ stayed south and east, along with the best surface convergence. As a result, nearly all of the model guidance was horribly wrong. The closest forecast in the class was still nearly 0.50” too high. I put too much credence into the upwards trends on the models – there were some indications already that KOMA was trending to be on the drier side of this event. Still, even if I had nailed the precipitation forecast, I would have busted hard on the temperatures. Need to be a lot more cautious going forward about situations where a frontal boundary and precipitation are around, and probably hedge down on temperatures during transitional seasons when a forecast site could be on the cold side of a front with rain.

Days 2-4: Much better forecasting overall, especially in regards to precipitation. However, got a lot of error points for being too cold across the board with temperatures. Buying into the colder temperatures in MOS made for an overall forecast that was too cold.

Forecasting for Week 2 at KOMA (Omaha, NE) Oct 16-19

Synoptic Set Up

A much quieter weather week is in store for Omaha. With high pressure building, most of the forecast week will see sunny or clear conditions. Light synoptic flow suggests the possibility for winds decoupling at night, giving rise to highly favorable conditions for strong radiational cooling. Temperatures will be trending up through the week as a upper-level trough moves east and heights continue to build.

Notes

NAM MOS guidance seems to be the preferred alternative with respect to overnight lows, given that forecast soundings show a clear signal for nocturnal inversions. Our class discussion notes that 1.4” of snow fell at KOMA over the weekend. Temperatures are in the mid-40s today, but cold overnight lows may mean that we need to consider patchy snow cover in forecasting overnight lows. Since overnight lows are expected to be quite cold to start the week, daytime highs should also be below normal for this time of year. The NWS official forecast does show a warming trend in overnight lows through the week. Delta Method was suggested as a possible approach, and makes sense with how similar the air masses will be day to day. The trickiest part of the forecast this week will be how cold overnight with conditions conducive to strong radiational cooling, and just how much things can warm up during the day.

WxChallenge for Omaha, Nebraska (KOMA) | Oct 9-12

A couple days into the forecast period for the second WxChallenge city for this fall, and I’ve experienced my worst forecast bust (for yesterday). Highlights in the post-mortem section. It has been a week of transitions for Omaha, which started off with relatively mild conditions but will end the week with possibility for patchy frost!

Synoptic Set Up

A 500 mb longwave trough will with multiple attendant vorticity maxima will pivot through the KOMA region during the first half of the forecast period before flow becomes more zonal. At the 300 mb level, multiple jet streaks could boost divergence with these 500 mb vorticity maxima. This enhanced lift, and strong wind shear profile could lead to some isolated strong-severe thunderstorms. The 850 mb shows evidence of a decently robust LLJ that would should bring a continuous supply of Gulf moisture up the Missouri Valley into the area. At the surface, a warm front looks to lift through Monday, then stall as a cold front in the vicinity of KOMA through late Wednesday due to the deep unidirectional winds parallel to the front boundary.

Notes

The potential for flash flooding, and bouts of heavy rain, is duly noted in the AFD during the first half of the weak. The synoptic ingredients for a long duration rainfall event are certainly evident. Soils in the area are already quite moist, given that flood warnings were present for stretches of the Missouri last week. GFS MOS QPF range on Sunday for 06Z Tuesday to 06Z Wednesday was 1.75-4.46”. NAM MOS QPF range for this time was 1.35-2.71”, consensus was 1.55-3.59”. Records around this time of year for QPF show that 1-2” can easily occur, despite the normal being only a mere 0.07”. SREF probabilities of >= 0.50” were above 90% for this period, and >= 1.00” was 50-70%, but over 2.00” of QPF probabilities were less than 10%. SREF mean was 2.73”, with a pretty large spread, from 0.69-5.54”. GFS mean was 3.93” with spread of 1.82-5.16”. For now, going with a superblend of the low-end of the ranges of MOS and plumes: 1.40”.

As of Monday, SREF and GEFs means had become much better aligned, with SREF mean at 2.83” and GEFs mean 2.95”. SREF spread was 1.34-4.46”, GEFs was 1.43-4.43”. QPF forecast shows KOMA a pretty large QPF gradient, and that uncertainty seems borne out well in the ensemble forecasts. SREF probabilities of >= 2.00” increased to the 10-30% with KOMA lying right on the fringe of 30-50% probabilities of this amount. >= 1.00” probabilities increased to 70-90%. Official NWS forecast as of 10Z Monday called for 1.65” during the forecast period Tuesday. GFS MOS QPF range was 2.10-4.21”, NAM 1.01-2.06”, consensus here is 1.55-3.13”. Based on these updates, I’m increasing my forecast to 1.85” – I’m hedging down below the SREF and GEFS means because I’m still not sure where the stationary/slow-moving surface front will set up in relation to KOMA, and where the best lift will be for heavy rain/thunderstorms as a result. Also, if the 850 mb LLJ fails to materialize close to KOMA, we could be looking at lower overall totals. Low SREF probabilities of over 2.00” also help justify this call. Looking at Wednesday, rain chances diminish considerably after the front moves through, but the story then becomes strong winds possible, with MOS pointing at 17-20 knot synoptic winds.

Ensembles continue to trend upwards as of Monday afternoon with QPF, SREF mean now 2.96” and GEFS mean is 3.16”. SREF probabilities are close to placing KOMA in the 50% >= 2.00” QPF. Will take one more look at 18Z MOS guidance and some other factors before finalizing, but am leaning towards increasing the precip forecast again, this time to maybe 1.90” I’m wary of going for 3” of QPF or higher, given that the entire month’s single-day QPF record is 3.09”. Even beyond 2” still seems unlikely.

On Tuesday, looking ahead at Wednesday and Thursday, the passage of a cold front is quite evident. Temperatures are forecast to drop considerably compared with the beginning of the weak, and precipitation will end, too. The forecast for Wednesday still retains a slight chance for some measurable QPF on the tail end of the main precipitation event Tuesday. Models have backed down from up to 0.25” of precip to less than 0.10”. SREF and GEFS means show approximately 0.04” on Wednesday. SREF probabilities showed that KOMA had a greater than 90% chance of receiving precipitation >= 0.01”, but less than 10% of >= 0.10”, going to go straight up with the ensemble means here. The other story for Wednesday will be stiff winds from the northwest, with MOS synoptic winds of 17-18 knots. This suggests even stronger sustained winds, and will aid in cold advection, keeping high temperatures suppressed. These blustery conditions are forecast to gradually abate by late in the day Thursday, such that the strongest winds Thursday should occur early in the overnight hours. Cold temperatures overnight into Thursday should be somewhat tempered by decent vertical mixing and overcast skies.

Post-Mortem

Day 1: Major bust across the board. Was off by more 5 degrees or more on both the high and low. This made up about half of the error points. The rest came from being off on max precipitation by more than 1.20”. MOS was considerably off the mark with temperatures – though NAM was closer. This was all due to the fact that a stationary frontal boundary never made it close enough to KOMA to realize warmer temperatures, and heavier precip. The axis of the 850 mb LLJ stayed south and east, along with the best surface convergence. As a result, nearly all of the model guidance was horribly wrong. The closest forecast in the class was still nearly 0.50” too high. I put too much credence into the upwards trends on the models – there were some indications already that KOMA was trending to be on the drier side of this event. Still, even if I had nailed the precipitation forecast, I would have still busted hard on the temperatures. Need to be a lot more cautious going forward about situations where a frontal boundary and precipitation are around, and probably hedge down on temperatures during transitional season when a forecast site could be on the cold side of a front with rain.

NYC Weather + Special Tropical Update – Sept 10, 2018

This week kicks off with a prolonged period of unsettled weather as a warm front and a cold front both impact the area. Chances for rain will be with us through Wednesday. Conditions finally improve late in the week. We luckily will avoid direct impacts (aside from high surf) from what will be an extremely dangerous Hurricane Florence, which looks set to make landfall on North Carolina late this week. Aside from Florence, two other storms pose threats to US territories this week.

Rest of today – cloudy, with periods of rain, heavy at times, especially later in the day towards the overnight hours. High temperatures will be in the upper-60s with cool, persistent onshore flow from the east. Ahead of an approaching warm front.

Tuesday – chances for thunderstorms will persist into Tuesday, with this slow-moving warm front finally pushing through. There could be thunderstorms overnight. Then, later in the day, as the trailing cold front moves through. Once the warm front passes over, we’ll be within the warm sector of the parent low pressure system, which will allow temperatures to climb into the low-80s with a marked increase in humidity.

Wednesday – the cold front mentioned above will slow down as it approaches us and dissipate. This will lead to continuing chances for rain, and thunderstorms with temperatures again in the low-80s.

Thursday – high pressure will finally begin to build in to our north by Thursday behind the cold front above. This will lead to better conditions, with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the low-80s.

Friday – partly sunny skies with high temperatures in the low-80s again with high pressure to our north.

Florence, Isaac, and Olivia All Pose a Threat to the US

These three storms have the potential to impact the Southeastern US, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii respectively within the next week. Among these, Florence is by far the most dangerous, as it could make landfall on North Carolina as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph.

Hurricane Florence

Over the past day or so, the picture for Florence has become much clearer. Various forecast models have come into remarkable alignment on both the overall track and intensity of Florence over the next 5 days, which means bad news for the Carolinas. The picture looks grim, with Florence set to make landfall as a very strong Category 4 storm packing sustained winds of 145 mph. Florence has nothing but warm water ahead of it, and there should be minimal impact ot this storm from vertical wind shear. Even if the storm weakens due to eyewall replacement cycles prior to landfall, that would only serve to increase the radius of its damaging winds. No matter how you slice it, Florence is likely to bring deadly storm surge and risk of life-threatening flash flooding and inland flooding. The fact that its forecast track slows to a crawl after landfall makes the flooding risk inland especially serious.

Hurricane Isaac

Isaac is a compact storm, which is leading to some uncertainty regarding both its track and intensity forecast. Small tropical cyclones are subject to wild swings in intensity both ways, which can be unpredictable at times. As of now, Isaac is forecast to cross the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles as a Category 1 storm, then continue into the Caribbean where hostile shear conditions should cause it to weaken. It is worth noting, despite the UKMET model being an outlier, that there are some signals that the storm could turn to the northwest later in the period, which could mean a threat to Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.

Hurricane Olivia

This storm continues to track towards Hawaii. Although weakening due to the influence of moderate wind shear, it is still set to hit Hawaii later this week as a strong tropical storm. The primary threat to Hawaii from Olivia will be in the form of heavy rain and flash flooding regardless of whether it makes direct landfall on one of the main islands.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jun 22, 2018

We got to enjoy one weekend last week where it didn’t rain at all. Unfortunately that won’t be the case this week with a storm passing through tomorrow. Temperatures will be cool with the influence of an onshore easterly wind before the passage of a warm front that will bring the chance for rain and thunderstorms.

Rest of today – cool, cloudy, with a high in the mid-70s.

Saturday – cloudy, with chances for rain and thunderstorms especially later in the day. The best chances for thunderstorms come with elevated convection late in the day and going into the overnight hours as a warm front approaches from the south. Temperatures will be cool in the mid-70s again.

Sunday – improving conditions with warmer temperatures in the warm sector after the passage of the warm front. Highs should reach into the mid-80s, possibly higher depending how much sun we get.

Monday – Canadian high pressure returns in the wake of this weekend’s storm and gives us sunny weather with mild temperatures in the low-80s.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jun 1, 2018

This weekend’s weather will feel gloomy and feature multiple chances for rain. The influence of the remnants of Subtropical Storm Alberto will influence the air mass, making it feel very humid, and allowing for the potential for heavy rain. Going into next week, mixed signals from major forecast models hint at the possibility for a coastal storm.

Rest of today – an early round of rain and embedded thunderstorms ahead of a warm front should give way to a relatively rain-free day. Fog should begin to dissipate as the rain passes through. Temperatures will be mild, in the low-80s with overcast conditions, with a muggy feel due to the influence of a tropical air mass (thanks Alberto!). Late in the day and into the overnight hours, a cold front will approach that could spark a few more storms.

Saturday – the cold front that approaches from the northwest overnight will slow down as it nears us and stall out in our vicinity. An impulse of upper-level energy will move through and likely spawn a low pressure center in the area. This will lead to better chances for rain than today. Temperatures will be around 80°F again with overcast skies.

Sunday – this will be the best day of the weekend as Canadian high pressure attempts to build in. This should yield dry conditions, though there will probably still be plenty of clouds around. Temperatures will be much cooler with highs around 70°F in this Canadian air mass.

Monday – there are mixed signals in forecast models that suggest the possibility of a coastal storm developing early next week. At this point it appears we’ll have a wet start to the week with cool temperatures in the mid-60s and mostly cloudy skies, as well as more rain.

NYC Weather Update – Apr 24, 2018

This week started off with a gorgeous, sunny day with above average warmth. Temperatures will remain largely at or above normal, with the exception of tomorrow as a storm system rolls through and brings us some rain. The end of the week may also see a chance for showers, but this will set the stage for us to enjoy another weekend of sunny, above average warmth.

Rest of today – increasing clouds as a storm approaches from the southwest. This increasing cloud cover should result in high temperatures a few degrees cooler than yesterday, topping out in the mid-60s. Overrunning precipitation will begin to fall late overnight in association with a warm/occluded front approaching from the south.

Wednesday – rain, with a thunderstorm possible. Mostly cloudy, and cooler with highs in the mid-50s.

Thursday – partly sunny with high temperatures warming back into the mid-60s as the storm system above exits to our northeast.

Friday – partly sunny with high temperatures again in the mid-60s. A chance for rain with a weaker storm system moving up again from our south.
