NYC Weekend Weather – Apr 21, 2017

A cool and dreary end of the week leads into a continued stretch of slightly below average temperatures for the weekend. Temperatures remain on the cool side with chances for rain to start next week before a warm up in the second half of next week. Far off in the Central Atlantic, a rare April tropical storm (Arlene) has formed.

Rest of today – rains moved through overnight and lingering showers this morning should end within the next couple hours. Cloudy with high temperatures only in the upper-50s to around 60°F.

Saturday – despite winds turning to the north with high pressure moving in from the west, temperatures should still rebound into the low-60s. Partly to mostly cloudy skies.

Sunday – mostly cloudy to overcast with temperatures hovering around 60°F.

Monday – the next chance for rain comes in along with a developing coastal low that lingers through Tuesday. Timing of this coastal storm remains somewhat uncertain, so it could end up being somewhat of a pest early next week.

 

Rare April Tropical Storm
We’re still 2 full months off from the official start of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season, which makes the formation of the first named storm of the season even more of a meteorological oddity. Tropical Storm Arlene will spend its life churning up the waters of the Central Atlantic without any impacts on land. It’s still worth noting that this is only the second time since the dawn of the satellite era that a tropical storm has been detected in April.

After a week of alternating days of wet and windy weather, we look ahead to improving conditions over the weekend and leading into next week. Sunny days with temperatures averaging anywhere between 5-10ºF above normal are right around the corner.

Rest of today – one of the last days of cooler than average weather we’ll see for a while. Temperatures hover in the low-50s with mostly cloudy skies. There is a chance for a passing shower with instability and moisture in the atmosphere from the backside of yesterday’s storm exiting east.

Saturday – skies clear, though temperatures remain below normal with high temperatures in the low-50s.

Sunday – a warm up begins as high pressure builds to the south of us. Clockwise flow around this high pressure brings warmer air in from the southwest. Temperatures warm into the mid-60s with sunny skies.

Monday – superb conditions for the Yankee’s home opener with sunny skies and high temperatures in the upper-60s to about 70ºF and sunny skies.

 

 

Drought Busted

The many rounds of rain we’ve seen over the course of the last couple weeks have finally busted the remaining drought conditions in the city itself and Long Island, just in time for the start of the growing season. Moderate drought still persists further north in the Hudson Valley.

Above average temperatures today give way to accumulating snow Friday. Very cold air then rushes in for the weekend, much along the lines of last weekend. This time around, cold air will persist, as a polar vortex is set to take hold of the East Coast. With this cold air in place, there is potential for a significant snowstorm in the form of a Nor’easter/coastal storm early to mid-week next week.

Rest of today – quite warm still with high temperatures remaining steady around the mid-50s. Breezy with west wind between 15-20mph under clear skies. Increasing clouds towards nightfall.

Friday – a rain/snow mix is anticipated to begin falling overnight, steadily transitioning to all snow by daybreak. This looks to be a messy commute. A cold front slides south of the area and a strengthening low pressure center moves along this frontal boundary, bringing us this snow. Due to warm temperatures in preceding days, snow will have a hard time sticking at first, but temperatures will remain cold enough throughout this event to yield likely snow accumulations of 3-5″.

Saturday – temperatures will remain well below normal as winds shift to the northwest following the passage of the cold front and storm system above. Breezy with winds around 15-20mph and decreasing clouds. High temperatures will struggle to hit freezing. Overnight lows leading into Saturday and then overnight into Sunday only in the teens.

Sunday – cold, sunny, with high temperature again barely at or above freezing. Spring forward occurs early Sunday, set your clocks ahead and get ready for more sunshine late in the day (not that it’ll help make things warmer right now).

 

Winter Not Giving Up – Possible Snowstorm Next Week

The predominant weather pattern thus far this winter has been one in which the jet stream has taken on an orientation that favors above average warmth over the eastern half of the US. Just as we turn the corner towards spring, it appears we are about to get slammed with a polar vortex and weather pattern more typical of February. While the cold itself will be enough to put a damper on spring, the real headline is the possibility for a significant late-season snowstorm in the form of a Nor’easter some time early to mid-week next week. Will keep you all updated on this as more data becomes available in the coming days.

NYC Weekend Weather – Feb 10, 2017

An eventful week of weather continues into the weekend, though not to the same degree of intensity. We will see another chance for snow, as well as rain this weekend. Temperatures rebound back to around or slightly above normal for the weekend. Looking ahead, there are some signals at another possible strong storm a couple weeks out, but it’s much to early to be certain.

Rest of today – cold, windy, sunny with areas of blowing snow. High temperatures below normal around 30ºF. Wind chills in the teens. Overnight tonight, we could pick up a light coating of fresh snow from a fast moving, and relatively weak storm system.

Below are some reported snowfall totals from yesterday’s coastal storm. As you’ll see, there was a fairly sharp cutoff between areas that received 9″ or more of snow. Long Island, Connecticut, and parts of the Hudson Valley got the largest totals. This was largely due to the fact that the most intense bands of heavy snow spent more time parked over these areas than it did in the city.

Saturday – conditions improving, along with warmer temperatures in the mid-40s under mostly cloudy skies.

Sunday – another storm system moves in from the Ohio Valley. This will bring a mixture of precipitation to the Northeast. Luckily, with high temperatures in the low-40s, we will see all rain.

Monday – winds pick up behind the departure of the storm system above, and skies should clear up as well. Temperatures should again be in the low-40s.

 

NYC Weekend Weather – Feb 03, 2017

The weekend starts of with a chill and below average temperatures before a warmup. Temperatures will be above average for the second half of the week. Next chance for precipitation will come with a storm system moving in Tuesday. Looking ahead, expecting that Punxsutaney will be right, and there will be a cooldown again.

Rest of today – clouds decrease slowly. Chilly with high temperatures struggling to hit freezing. Brisk northwest winds will keep windchills below 20ºF.

Saturday – with strong high pressure over the Ohio Valley, we’ll see clear skies. However, since we will be on the east side of this high pressure center, cold air will continue to flow in from Canada, keeping high temperatures at around freezing.

Sunday – as this high pressure moves east, and we end up on the west side of it, clockwise flow around it will bring warmer are to the area, and temperatures will rebound into the low-40s with mostly cloudy skies.

Monday – above average temperatures in the low-40s continue with partly cloudy skies.

 

Drought Improves

Recent beneficial rains and snows have improved the drought situation statewide. However, moderate to severe drought continues to plague the downstate region.

The weekend period will see a gradual return to seasonably cold temperatures, a departure from the long stretch of above normal warmth we’ve seen the last week or so. A series of weak disturbances will move through the area, but these are not expected to bring much in the way of precipitation.

Rest of today – breezy with west winds of 20mph. Mostly cloudy with high temperatures in the low-40s. A weak disturbance brings a chance of snow flurries, but no accumulation is expected.

Saturday (Lunar New Year) – still above normal with high temperatures in the mid-40s and partly sunny. Not as windy as today, but with a strong low located over Labrador, westerly winds in the 15-20mph range will persist.

Sunday – high temperatures start to fall back to around 40°F. More clouds than sun.

Monday – colder, with high temperatures in the upper-30s and partly sunny skies.

Drought Update

The 1-2″ of rain we picked up during this past week’s Nor’easter, while beneficial, did little to change the drought picture as compared to last week.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jan 13, 2016

The beginning of the weekend will be marked by a return to seasonable temperatures after the warm spell we just experienced. Temperatures moderate for the second half of the weekend reach back into above normal territory to start next week.

Rest of today – temperatures dropping from the mid-40s into the mid-20s overnight. Clouds increase as a frontal system far to our south begins to influence our weather.

Saturday – high temperatures only in the low-mid 30s. A small chance of snow in the afternoon though we’re really only on the fringe of the area of influence of a largely stationary front far to our south. Mostly cloudy skies otherwise.

Sunday – skies clear and temperatures rise back up to around 40ºF. High pressure continues to build and move east, allowing winds to turn to the south and southwest bringing warmer air our way.

Monday (MLK Day) – should be a pleasant day for anyone who’s out volunteering on this holiday. Sunny with high temperatures in the low-40s.

NYC New Year’s Weather – Dec 30, 2016

A quick update here to give you all the weather for the upcoming New Years’ Eve celebrations this weekend. It should be a good night for festivities on Saturday, with only a slight chance for any precipitation. More substantial rains come Monday, cleansing us of the past year!

Rest of today – some widely scattered light snow showers are possible. Should be a mostly sunny day otherwise. Temperatures will be dropping to around 30ºF in the city overnight.

Saturday (New Year’s Eve) – partly sunny through the day but then mostly cloudy in the overnight hours as a weak storm system approaches from the west. This may bring a glancing shot at some rain showers overnight. High temperatures in the low-40s. Overnight lows should be not too chilly, in the upper-30s.

Sunday – New Year’s Day should see clouds decreasing, but clouds will increase again overnight as a more vigorous storm system approaches. High temperatures warm up a bit before this frontal boundary passes late on Monday, should top out in the mid-40s.

Monday – chance of a rain/snow mix in the city early in the day as temperatures will be cold enough, but this should transition to all rain by the afternoon hours with high temperatures in the mid-40s again.

NYC Weekend Weather – Dec 15, 2016

Apologies for the lack of updates recently. Winter weather has come in full force a few days ahead of the actual Winter Solstice. We’ll see possibly record-tying or record-breaking cold Friday in some parts of the area, our first measurable snowfall in the city this season, all while temperatures swing about 30ºF from now through Sunday. The medium term shows a continuance of average to below-average temperatures in the upper-30s and low-40s.

Rest of today – we had some passing snow showers this morning, and there will be another chance for snow showers this afternoon. The main story will be the wind, cold temperatures, and low wind chills. A wind advisory is in effect for today with a high wind warning in place for tonight. Sustained winds of 20-30mph are expected, with wind gusts between 40mph to as high as 60mph possible later. Combined with high temperatures only in the mid-20s, this will result in wind chills of between 0-10ºF in the city.

Friday – slightly colder than today with highs in the mid-20s, with a very cold start to the morning as overnight lows drop into the teens. Winds will slowly abate through the course of the day as the high pressure center depicted above moves east over us, lessening the pressure gradient. Overnight Friday, a warm front approaches and brings the possibility for 1-2″ of snow.

Saturday – the snow will continue into the first half of Saturday with the possibility of 1-2″ additional inches of accumulation before temperatures warm and winds turn towards the southwest. There is some question as to whether some period of freezing rain will occur before a transition to all rain from south to north in the afternoon hours. High temperatures rebound nicely into the upper-40s in the wake of the warm front passing through.

Sunday – a cold front will follow the passage of the warm front mentioned above, but that shouldn’t happen until late Sunday. Ahead of that cold front passing, temperatures will continue to warm into the low-mid 50s as rain continues to fall. That snow won’t stick around long!

NYC Weekend Weather – Nov 18, 2016

An extended period of well above normal temperatures comes to an abrupt end this weekend as a strong cold front pushes through overnight Saturday into Sunday. On the back side of this frontal boundary, temperatures will average around 15ºF lower than we’ve seen this week. If you like it mild, go out and enjoy this weather before Saturday!

Rest of today – sunny and mild with high temperatures in the low-60s.

Saturday – another mild day on tap with lots of sun and a high around 60ºF. Chances for rain increase into the overnight hours, at this point peaking around midnight. Winds will pick up first from the southeast ahead of the cold front, then to the west. Sustained winds of 15-20mph with gusts over 30mph are possible.

Sunday – rain chances taper off but winds remain in the 20-30mph with strong gusts up to 40mph. High temperatures will be significantly colder than we’ve gotten used to and below normal in the mid-40s. A tight pressure gradient sets up between the departing low and a high pressure center to the southwest, blasting us with cold Canadian air as a result.
