NYC Weather Update – May 22, 2017

Quite a contrast in temperatures this week with an active weather pattern that holds chances for precipitation nearly every day of the week. Temperatures will generally range a few degrees below normal. Looking ahead to Memorial Day weekend, weather could be a mixed bag with some rain chances for Sunday and Monday.

Rest of today – cool, cloudy, with steadier rains moving through the afternoon hours into the early evening accompanying the passage of a cold front. High temperatures around 60ºF.

Tuesday – drier with only a slight chance of showers late in the day as another weak disturbance moves by south of region. High temperature around 70ºF and mostly cloudy skies.

Wednesday – scattered showers possible throughout the day. High temperatures again near 70ºF.

Thursday – a warm front and an accompanying low pressure system pass over the area Thursday bringing another chance for widespread rain. Temperatures in the upper-60s under mostly cloudy skies.

 

 

NYC Weekend Weather – May 19, 2017

We’re well on pace to hit the low-90s again today, which would officially mark the first heat wave of 2017. The Bermuda high that led to these sultry conditions allowed us to heat up even more than official National Weather Service forecasts called for. Temperatures ranged 20ºF above normal in many places away from south facing shorelines. The weekend sees a drastic change in airmasses and a return to more seasonable conditions before the next chance for rain Monday.

Rest of today – hot, humid, high temperatures reaching the low-90s for most areas again except the south-facing shorelines of Long Island. Air quality has improved today so no alert is active. A cold front passes through the area later this evening, with a chance for isolated thunderstorms.

Saturday – the passage of the cold front late Friday sets the stage for a dramatic shift in airmasses. Behind the cold front, a high pressure center over Canada will bring much cooler air riding winds from the north and northeast. Temperatures Saturday are expected to cool off into the upper-60s, with much drier conditions and mostly sunny skies.

Sunday – another cool day with temperatures in the mid-60s and clouds building ahead of a warm front that will move through Monday.

Monday – a warm front, followed quickly by a cold front pushes through Monday. The result will be mostly cloudy skies and an extended period of showers through the day. Temperatures will be slightly warmer, in the low-70s.

 

 

NYC Weather Update – Apr 17, 2017

The incredible run of summer-like weather we’ve enjoyed the last week comes to a close as a more seasonable weather pattern takes hold this week. Temperatures will range from average to slightly below average and we’ll see a chance for rain late this week.

Tuesday – mostly clear skies with high temperatures in the upper-50s, possibly reaching into the low-60s. An easterly onshore breeze induced by a high pressure center to the northeast will bring cooler these cooler temperatures.

Wednesday – cooler day on tap with increasing clouds and high temperatures in the low-50s.

Thursday – chances for showers as a warm front then cold front push through from Thursday into Friday. High temperatures a bit warmer in the low-60s before the cold front passes.

Friday – chance of rain diminishing through the day with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures again in the low-60s.

 

Drought Over, Cooler, Wet Pattern in Store

With bountiful spring rains recently and that late winter snow storm, we’ve fully recovered from drought conditions across almost the entirety of the state with the exception of parts of the Hudson Valley and Catskills.

Multiple rounds of storms are expected to favor a cooler and wetter medium term outlook.

NYC Weather Update – Apr 3, 2017

wwwThe first week of April kicks off with multiple rounds of rain. Two separate storms are expected to bring drenching rains on Tuesday and Thursday. There may be some minor flooding concerns with 1″ of rain possible out of each system, on top of the rains we received last week.

Rest of today – cloudy, mild, with high temperatures in the upper-50s. Not a bad day for the Mets season opener.

Tuesday – late Monday, rain starts moving in ahead of an advancing warm front. Rain should begin around 10PM this evening and pick up in intensity overnight. Some thunderstorms are possible. Rain continues through most of the work day Tuesday, with some heavy rain possible. Mild again with high temperatures in the upper-50s.

Wednesday – brief respite between two storm systems, a gem of a spring day with high temperatures in the low-60s and mostly sunny to clear skies.

Thursday – temperatures cool off into the low-50s as the second storm system of the week impacts us and brings us yet another round of moderate to heavy rains.

 

NYC Weather Update – Mar 6, 2017

The week starts off with a thaw from the Arctic cold we experienced over the weekend. We settle into a familiar pattern of a warm front then cold front passage that will see temperatures swing up into the low-60s mid-week before dropping back to seasonable levels towards the late week period.4

Rest of today – mostly sunny, with winds now shifting to the south, high temperatures should reach into the low-40s.

Tuesday – much warmer with high temperatures in the mid-50s, mostly cloudy with a chance for rain due to a cold front approaching. Rain chances increase heading towards the overnight hours.

Wednesday – rain tapering off early, then conditions improving to mostly sunny. High temperatures still forecast to reach the low-60s before the cold front actually passes through.

Thursday – temperatures fall back into the mid-upper 40s behind the cold front with mostly sunny skies.

 

Return to Normal Temperatures to Last

Looking ahead, it appears in the medium term that temperatures will moderate into seasonable mid-40s or lower and stay that way until late in the month. We could see a couple more shots at accumulating snow during this stretch.

 

NYC Weather Update – Feb 27, 2017

The beginning of this week will somewhat echo the end of last week, with temperatures starting off on the cooler side, then ramping up before the passage of a cold front that could also bring some thunderstorms. After this cold front passes, temperatures take a dive closer to normal levels.

Rest of today – increasing clouds will cap temperatures in the low-50s.

Tuesday – warmer but with increasing chances for rain during the day. High temperatures in the upper-50s.

Wednesday – during the early morning hours, a warm front associated with a low pressure center moving across southern Ontario will push through. This will set the stage for possibly record-breaking warmth during the day. Southwest flow will allow temperatures to steadily climb into the upper-60s and possibly over 70°F. Later in the day, a trailing cold front will make its approach. This will serve as a trigger for showers and thunderstorms to develop late in the day and into the early overnight hours. Some of the storms could approach marginally severe criteria.

Thursday – following the cold front passing through, winds shift to the northwest. This will result in much cooler temperatures dropping through the day into the upper-40s.

 

Cooler Weather Ahead

Looking ahead to the mid-month period, it does appear we may see some cooler than normal temperatures prior to the formal onset of spring.

NYC Weekend Weather – Feb 17, 2017

This weekend will be characterized by well above normal temperatures and fair conditions. This warm trend looks to continue into next week, and perhaps beyond. Enjoy the warmth, and the early preview of spring!

Rest of today – normal high temperatures around 40°F with sunny skies.

Saturday – significantly warmer, sunny, with high temperatures in the mid-50s as a warm front pushes through.

Sunday – warm again, possibly warmer than Saturday with temperatures approaching 60°F. High pressure to the southwest will continue to pump warm air from the deep south our way.

Monday – cooler, though still above normal, with high temperature around 50°F and sunny.

 

Warm Trend to Continue

Climate Prediction Center points to a high likelihood for above normal temperatures in the next 6-10 days for much of the Eastern United States. Looking ahead, after a brief cool down to begin next week, temperatures go right back up into the mid-upper 50s by the middle of next week.

NYC Weather Update – Feb 14, 2017

After a wild week of weather last week, things are markedly calmer this week. Temperatures will stay slightly below normal for the duration of the week. We get only a very slight chance at precipitation on Wednesday, otherwise, dry conditions prevail.

Rest of today – a cloudy start to the day should give way to more sun later on. However, temperatures will still be just below normal with highs expected around 40ºF.

Wednesday – a storm system passing to the north will push a warm front through, raising temperatures into the mid-40s and also giving us a slight chance for rain. Mostly cloudy skies.

Thursday – once that trailing cold front pictured above moves through, temperatures once again drop to below normal levels in the upper-30s. Winds pick up from the northwest yielding even colder wind chills in the upper-20s.

Friday – sunnier, and less windy, but temperatures expected to remain below normal again in the upper-30s.

 

NYC Weather Update – Feb 06, 2017

The weather story of this week will be some wild temperature swings as we encounter two storm systems Wednesday and Thursday.

Rest of today – mostly sunny to clear skies with high temperatures topping out in the low-40s.

Tuesday – temperatures start to warm up with an approaching warm front. A low pressure system north of us will pull lots of warm, moist air ahead of it as it moves through the region. High temperatures are expected to hit the low-50s with periods of rain throughout the day.

Wednesday – overnight, temperatures will actually rise due to the influence of warm air flowing into the area following the passage of the aforementioned warm front. Rain should end by the morning commute, giving us a chance to break some record high temperatures in the area. High temperatures are expected to range in the upper-50s to the low-60s with any significant breaks of sun.

Thursday – the warmup does not last. As the low pressure system above continues to track northeast across Quebec, a secondary low pressure center will form along a trailing cold front attached to this first low. High temperatures will only be in the low-30s, almost 30ºF cooler than Wednesday. Overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, it should get cold enough for the secondary low pressure center to spark some accumulating snows in the city. Snowfall totals are expected to be light, 1-3″ max in the city.

 

NYC Weekend Weather – Dec 15, 2016

Apologies for the lack of updates recently. Winter weather has come in full force a few days ahead of the actual Winter Solstice. We’ll see possibly record-tying or record-breaking cold Friday in some parts of the area, our first measurable snowfall in the city this season, all while temperatures swing about 30ºF from now through Sunday. The medium term shows a continuance of average to below-average temperatures in the upper-30s and low-40s.

Rest of today – we had some passing snow showers this morning, and there will be another chance for snow showers this afternoon. The main story will be the wind, cold temperatures, and low wind chills. A wind advisory is in effect for today with a high wind warning in place for tonight. Sustained winds of 20-30mph are expected, with wind gusts between 40mph to as high as 60mph possible later. Combined with high temperatures only in the mid-20s, this will result in wind chills of between 0-10ºF in the city.

Friday – slightly colder than today with highs in the mid-20s, with a very cold start to the morning as overnight lows drop into the teens. Winds will slowly abate through the course of the day as the high pressure center depicted above moves east over us, lessening the pressure gradient. Overnight Friday, a warm front approaches and brings the possibility for 1-2″ of snow.

Saturday – the snow will continue into the first half of Saturday with the possibility of 1-2″ additional inches of accumulation before temperatures warm and winds turn towards the southwest. There is some question as to whether some period of freezing rain will occur before a transition to all rain from south to north in the afternoon hours. High temperatures rebound nicely into the upper-40s in the wake of the warm front passing through.

Sunday – a cold front will follow the passage of the warm front mentioned above, but that shouldn’t happen until late Sunday. Ahead of that cold front passing, temperatures will continue to warm into the low-mid 50s as rain continues to fall. That snow won’t stick around long!
