NYC Snowfall Forecast – Mar 3, 2019

A winter storm warning is in effect for NYC and the surrounding metropolitan region. This isn’t exactly how we’d all want to start March off! This storm is anticipated to bring some travel impacts to the area, however, for reasons discussed below, this won’t be a blockbuster snowmaker. Watch out for a slog of a morning commute tomorrow. This snow may also stick for a while – a frigid continental polar air mass from Canada will sweep in behind this storm bringing temperatures generally 10-15°F below normal for this time of year. High temperatures in the mid-30s should limit melting.

Headlines

Snowfall totals: I’m forecasting 4-6″ in parts of eastern Queens, southeastern Brooklyn, and lower totals further east into Long Island. Higher totals of 6-8″ are more likely to occur in Manhattan, the Bronx, and points further inland, particularly interior regions of Connecticut. Below are probabilistic forecast maps of various amounts of snow (>= 2″, >= 6″, and >= 8″).

Timing: Precipitation starting in earnest around 8PM. Starting out as a mix of rain/snow near the coast, but transitioning over to all snow later in the evening. The heaviest snow will happen overnight. Because of the fast-moving nature of this storm, precipitation is expected to end rather quickly between 4-6AM Monday morning in the city.

Uncertainties: There is still potential for a wobble in the storm track, further east and south would result in higher snow totals near the coast. Further west and closer to the coast would mean more mixing/rain at the coast and lower snow totals. There will be a rather sharp gradient of increasing snowfall totals spreading across the region (as seen in the previous probabilistic snowfall total forecasts). Mesoscale heavy snow bands will be difficult to pinpoint ahead of time. Some areas could see several inches more than neighboring areas just a few miles south and east.

Synoptic Set Up (The Big Picture)

A storm that’s currently unleashing severe storms with tornadoes across the Deep South now will slide up along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern coast of the US. As this storm progresses, it will move close to the 40°N/70°W benchmark, a spot that’s climatologically correlated to heavy snow events along the heavily populated I-95 corridor during the winter. This storm will continue to strengthen as it moves offshore. Snow is expected to develop ahead of the advancing warm front associated with this storm as its precipitation shield advances. Heavier snow is forecast to develop later on as strong isentropic lift associated with the warm front occurs, creating the potential for frontogenesis and some mesoscale bands of very heavy snow. The storm is expected to move quickly along the Northeast coast, such that the duration of precipitation in any one spot is expected to be less than 12 hours.

At the 500 mb level, a shortwave trough will provide positive vorticity and some additional lift/divergence, allowing the storm to continue strengthening. Finally, at the 300 mb level, the surface low will be close to the entrance region of a curved 300 mb jet streak. This will provide yet more divergence and lift, if only for a brief period.

Evolution of the Storm Track

Over the course of the last three days, forecast models have come into better agreement with this storm tracking close to the 40°N/70°W benchmark (circled in red in the images below). Note the increasingly tight clustering of storm center locations around the benchmark in progressive storm track forecasts from the Weather Prediction Center.

The tightening clustering of these forecast storm center locations lends greater confidence to the idea that the storm will track very close to the benchmark.

Ensemble Snowfall Totals

The two primary model ensembles (GEFS and SREF) have been edging ever so slightly upwards in their forecast mean snowfall totals, while the model spread has decreased over the weekend

These means/spreads were part of what informed my own forecast snowfall totals at the top of this post.

Factors Supporting Heavy Snow

  • Storm track over or very near the benchmark
  • Strong isentropic lift and possible frontogenesis (see images below). Strong lift is a critical ingredient for generating heavy precipitation
  • Possibility of mesoscale bands as a result of this lift, generating heavy snowfall rates
  • Temperatures probably supporting frozen precipitation through the atmosphere

Factors Suggesting Lower Snow Totals

  • Possibility still remains for storm track to shift further inland, introducing more warm air off the ocean, more rain than snow at the coast
  • Warm advection associated with the storm’s warm front possibly also affecting snow development. Note how close the overlapping temperature and dew point profiles in the forecast soundings above are to the freezing mark, the dashed blue line the middle of the image that is angled to the right at 45°. Evaporational cooling should help somewhat in staving off warming but if temperatures warm more than forecast, we could see more mixing
  • Mesoscale bands of heavy snow may not push far enough onshore
  • Surface temperatures ahead of the storm in the upper-30s near the coast, urban heat island effect could retard snow accumulation
  • Fast moving nature of the storm, total precipitation window only 12 hours
  • Small window for the best moisture support at the 850 mb level. No real evidence to suggest a low-level jet carrying a ton of moisture into the region.

NYC Weather Update – Jan 28, 2019

This week starts off quiet, and cold with sunny skies today. Tomorrow brings a mess of rain/snow mix, rain, then possibly ending with snow leading into Wednesday. A blast of Arctic air lies behind the storm system bringing this precipitation, with low temperatures plummeting into the single digits overnight into Thursday. The Arctic chill stay in place until the weekend.

Rest of today – sunny, with some scattered high clouds. Temperatures around freezing. Overnight lows in the upper-20s.

Tuesday – the timing of the next storm system to affect us, at this time, points to a period of rain/snow mix starting in the late morning Tuesday. A warm front should induce enough warm advection to raise temperatures into the low-40s. That will allow for a transition to all rain in the city until the overnight hours when temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing into the upper-20s. A period of all snow should follow.

Wednesday – periods of heavy snow squalls are possible before the storm finally clears out. At this time, forecasters are calling for about 1″ of snow accumulation starting Tuesday night for NYC. If the forecast trends colder, we could see some more snow, but no blockbuster amounts either way. High temperatures Wednesday should rise to around freezing. On the cold back side of the passing storm, Arctic air will swing into the region. Overnight lows are forecast to only be in the single digits going into Thursday morning.

Weather Prediction Center surface forecast for 7PM Wednesday

Thursday – frigid day in store with Arctic high pressure in control. Sunny skies but temperatures only expected to reach into the mid-teens. Overnight lows into Friday will stay chilly, only around 10°F.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jan 4, 2019

The first weekend of 2019 holds a mixed bag for NYC. Saturday looks to be a rainy day, while Sunday should shape up to be a pleasant, milder day, though not nearly as warm as New Year’s Day. Going into next week, another storm system approaches and may bring precipitation as early as Monday evening. This weekend, I’ll have a follow up post regarding the high likelihood of El Nino developing in the Pacific this winter, and what implications this could have for tangible weather this season in our region.

Rest of today – Increasing clouds. High temperatures in the mid-40s. Overnight, rain starts to move in ahead of an approaching warm front associated with a surface low tracking east and offshore of the Delmarva Peninsula. Overnight lows around 40.

Weather Prediction Center surface forecast for 7AM Saturday. With a warm front positioned to our south, persistent northeasterly onshore winds will present a possible issue for coastal flooding, and keep temperatures suppressed.

Saturday – rain for the bulk of the morning and the afternoon hours. Cooler, with onshore flow north of the warm front mentioned above. Temperatures topping out in the low-40s. Rain tapering off towards the late evening hours, then skies steadily clearing with overnight lows in the mid-30s.

Sunday – bright, sunny day on tap behind the storm system Saturday day. Temperatures a touch warmer in the mid-40s. Overnight lows into Monday dropping into the low-30s as a cold front moves through. No precipitation anticipated with this cold front at this time.

GFS model output for Monday at 5PM. By this time, we’re forecast to be under an area of high pressure, but wedged between the departing weekend storm and the next storm approaching form our west.

Monday – increasing clouds ahead of the next storm system. Temperatures in the mid-30s with colder air in place behind the cold front mentioned above. Overnight lows holding steady, dropping a couple degrees maybe – another warm front will help stabilize temperatures as rain or a rain/snow mix develops. Exact precipitation type is difficult to determine at this time.

NYC New Year’s Eve Weather – Dec 31, 2018

New Year’s Eve this year looks like a washout, but temperatures will be very mild. In fact temperatures will maintain a non-diurnal trend, warming through the night. New Year’s Day could see the possibility of record warmth before a return to more normal conditions mid-week. Another storm system approaches for the end of the week.

Rest of today – cloudy with high temperatures in the upper-40s. A warm front approaching from the south and west will start to bring steady rain to the area by late afternoon. A favorable low-level jet, along with robust isentropic lift (overrunning of warm air above cold air along the warm front) should enable plenty of moisture and enough instability to trigger bouts of heavy rain later in the evening and overnight. Unfortunately, the bulk of rain looks to fall right during periods when revelers will be out on the town celebrating the new year. Winds will pick up as well with the pressure gradient tightening and efficient downward momentum transfer of low-level jet winds during periods of precipitation. As mentioned above, temperatures will follow a non-diurnal trend, with the warm front and warm sector of this storm advecting milder air from the southeast. Temperatures will actually rise into the mid-50s overnight.

NAM (North American Model) forecast of 850 mb relative humidity and winds for 10PM tonight. The blue hues indicate saturated air, while we can see some wind barbs showing winds > 60 knots. These are classic signs of a low-level jet that is often implicated in producing heavy precipitation events.

This indicates a tight pressure gradient that will drive strong winds. This surface forecast also suggests that our time in the warm sector of this low (outlined in light orange above) will be brief. Warm advection (transport of warm air) won’t last long into Tuesday.

Tuesday (New Year’s Day) – I’ll follow up with a detailed forecast, the start of 2019 will be quite interesting for a couple reasons, one being possible record warmth and the other being strong, gusty winds. Temperatures will be rising throughout the night into Tuesday such that high temperatures will peak early in the day. Depending on exactly when this happens, temperatures could push above 60ºF, which would be nearing or exceeding records. The record high for January 1st at Central Park is 62ºF set in 1966. A lot will hinge on whether clouds clear up early enough to allow for a few hours of solid sunshine. This warmth will be short-lived though, because we won’t spend that much time in the warm sector of this parent low. As a trailing cold front moves through, winds will shift to the northwest and result in cold advection. As a result, temperatures will be falling during the day into the upper-40s by sunset. Temperatures are forecast to continue dropping overnight into Wednesday with lows bottoming out around freezing in the city.

Wednesday – a rude awakening to normal temperatures for this time of year. There will be a cold start to the day with high temperatures 20ºF cooler than Tuesday, in the upper-30s. Partly cloudy skies. Overnight lows in the mid-30s.

Thursday – warmer than Wednesday with another storm system approaching. So far, looking at a mostly cloudy day with highs in the low-40s. Rain may start as early as the overnight hours. A lot of uncertainty still at this time with the timing, scope, and precipitation type of this next storm though.

NYC Weather Update – Weekend Nor’easter – Oct 26, 2018

I haven’t had time to post about the current week’s WxChallenge forecasts for Caribou, ME, which I’ll have a follow up post about Saturday or Sunday to go over my results. Instead, this week, I’m going to put the same forecast skills I’ve been applying to the upcoming nor’easter that’s going to impact NYC Saturday. I’ll provide a deterministic (exact number) forecast for high temperature, low temperature, maximum sustained wind speed, and total accumulated precipitation for the period starting 2AM Saturday and ending 2AM Sunday, with a less exact forecast for the rest of the weekend. In my later follow up post, I’ll verify my results and see just how close I got. For purposes of verification, my forecast will be for LGA. If you’re only reading this summary, just know that Saturday will be a windy, raw, rainy day, but that conditions will improve as the day goes on.

Friday – partly sunny skies with high temperatures in the low-50s. Light winds from the south-southeast.

Saturday – High temperature: 54°F. Low: 48°F. Maximum sustained winds (2-minute averaged): 34.5 mph from the east-northeast. Total precipitation: 1.25″. The bulk of the rain should end by the afternoon hours.

Sunday – mostly cloudy, high temperatures in the upper-50s with return flow from the west downsloping into the area.

Forecast Discussion

The nor’easter that’s coming to us this weekend has tropical origins as the remnants of Hurricane Willa, which originated in the Eastern Pacific and made landfall in Mexico as an intense Category 3 storm. This means that it will be able to tap to tropical moisture, bringing the potential for a heavy rainfall event. At the surface, a low pressure center will be intensifying as it slides up along the Mid-Atlantic coast. At the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, the set up is favorable for robust divergence, which should result in to strong surface convergence and lift. At the 850 mb level, there are indications of a strong low-level jet with winds as high as 50 knots from the east to east-northeast during the Saturday morning hours ahead of the warm front attached to the nor’easter. This would enable highly efficient moisture transport and convergence in our area. The net result of this should be periods of heavy rain. This is what justifies rainfall totals over an inch, though because of the relatively fast forward speed of this storm, I don’t believe that totals above 1.50″ are likely.

These aren’t pictured below, but MOS (model output statistics), and forecast plumes (ensembles of many different iterations of the same forecast model) probabilities suggest a consensus range of 1.15″-1.24″. Short Range Ensemble Forecast (SREF) probabilities show a greater than 90% chance for rainfall totals greater than or equal to 0.50″, 70-90% chance of totals greater than or equal to 1.00″, but very low chances of totals exceed 2.00″. The record rainfall for Saturday at LGA is 1.76″, though there are higher record totals surrounding this date, so this record isn’t what we’d call particularly strong.

On the temperature front, the trajectory of the onshore flow accompanying this storm actually brings it over Atlantic waters that are warmer than the air temperatures have been this week. This should bring warmer air into the area, however, because it will also be raining and cloudy, evaporational cooling will be a concern (as it rains, some of the moisture from raindrops will evaporate, which takes heat input to achieve, lowering surrounding temperatures), and that will likely knock temperatures down a bit. Overnight lows should end up being fairly mild in comparison to previous nights because of cloud cover and the aforementioned winds over warmer waters.

The wind speeds should be quite strong tomorrow. MOS is showing winds in the 24-26 knot range. However, given that 850 mb winds will be even strong, in the 50 knot range, and it will be precipitating, meaning downward transfer of momentum by raindrops should mix some of these stronger winds to the surface, which is why I think sustained winds could be as high as 35 mph at some point in the day at LGA (which is exposed near open water, so there’s less of an impact from friction over the land). I think gusts could easily top 40-45 mph tomorrow during the most intense rain squalls.

500 mb vorticity and heights, the yellow-orange-purple shading shows progressively stronger values of positive vorticity. Without getting too technical, positive vorticity is related to divergence aloft, which helps aid upwards motion (lift). Strong upwards motion can lead to clouds and precipitation.

Shaded areas indicate strong winds at the 300 mb level. These are referred to as jet streaks. Our region is forecast to lie within the left exit region of a jet streak, an area that favors divergence and enhanced upwards motion/lift

Not surprisingly, the SREF probability forecast shows a 70-90% probability of omega (a quantitative measure of lift) exceeding -9 microbars/sec, which is considered quite strong

Update: Verification

According to the KLGA Daily Climatological Report showed the following for Saturday, October 27, 2018:

High Temperature: 53°F

Low Temperature: 45°F

Max Wind: 41 mph

Max Gust: 50 mph

Total QPF (this is taken from METAR data): 0.98″

I’ll attempt to do a post-mortem on the winds and QPF forecast where I missed pretty significantly later in the week.

NYC Weather Update – Sept 26, 2018

Severe thunderstorms could impact the area later today ahead of an approaching cold front. Following the passage of this cold front, conditions will begin to improve, setting us up for a weekend with pleasant, cooler, classic autumn weather.

Rest of todayStorm Prediction Center in Norman, OK has placed parts of the NYC Tri-State (the city, north and west) under a slight risk of severe weather today. Warm, moist air (read: unstable, theta-e rich) is in place with the area in the warm sector of an advancing low pressure center located in Ontario/Quebec. Some rain/thunderstorm activity could take place along a weak warm front this morning. The main focus of activity will occur later today with a cold front approaching from the west.

This cold front will be accompanied by a streak of strong upper level winds (40-50 knots), which will be capable of providing the magnitude of vertical wind shear necessary for some strong to severe thunderstorms to organize. Given the direction of the winds at upper levels being largely parallel to the advancing frontal boundary, expect that the primary storm format will be a QLCS (quasi-lineary convective system) – a line or broken line of storms. High Resolution Rapid Refresh models depict the bulk of storm activity approaching the city around 8PM this evening. Given this storm format and synoptic set up, the most likely severe threat will be damaging wind gusts. Heavy rain could trigger flash flooding as well, since the ground is still quite saturated from yesterday’s rain.

The biggest limiting factor to storm strength today will be overcast skies limiting daytime destabilization from solar heating. As is often the case, I would expect the storms to be weakening somewhat as they approach a more stable marine air layer near NYC. Overall, expect a cloudy day with high temperatures in the low-80s and a muggy feel.

Thursday – the cold front that brings us this possibly severe today will slow down as it pushes south of us, such that it remains close enough that a weak disturbance moving along it could bring us some additional showers late in the day. Skies will be partly sunny with much cooler high temperatures in the upper-60s.

Friday – easterly onshore flow on the back side of this cold front forecast to be to our south will keep skies cloudy with high temperatures around 70°F – chance for showers lingers.

Saturday – high pressure finally starts to take control of sensible weather and should produce a mostly sunny day with crisp conditions and high temperatures in the low-70s.

NYC Weather + Special Tropical Update – Sept 10, 2018

This week kicks off with a prolonged period of unsettled weather as a warm front and a cold front both impact the area. Chances for rain will be with us through Wednesday. Conditions finally improve late in the week. We luckily will avoid direct impacts (aside from high surf) from what will be an extremely dangerous Hurricane Florence, which looks set to make landfall on North Carolina late this week. Aside from Florence, two other storms pose threats to US territories this week.

Rest of today – cloudy, with periods of rain, heavy at times, especially later in the day towards the overnight hours. High temperatures will be in the upper-60s with cool, persistent onshore flow from the east. Ahead of an approaching warm front.

Tuesday – chances for thunderstorms will persist into Tuesday, with this slow-moving warm front finally pushing through. There could be thunderstorms overnight. Then, later in the day, as the trailing cold front moves through. Once the warm front passes over, we’ll be within the warm sector of the parent low pressure system, which will allow temperatures to climb into the low-80s with a marked increase in humidity.

Wednesday – the cold front mentioned above will slow down as it approaches us and dissipate. This will lead to continuing chances for rain, and thunderstorms with temperatures again in the low-80s.

Thursday – high pressure will finally begin to build in to our north by Thursday behind the cold front above. This will lead to better conditions, with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the low-80s.

Friday – partly sunny skies with high temperatures in the low-80s again with high pressure to our north.

Florence, Isaac, and Olivia All Pose a Threat to the US

These three storms have the potential to impact the Southeastern US, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii respectively within the next week. Among these, Florence is by far the most dangerous, as it could make landfall on North Carolina as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph.

Hurricane Florence

Over the past day or so, the picture for Florence has become much clearer. Various forecast models have come into remarkable alignment on both the overall track and intensity of Florence over the next 5 days, which means bad news for the Carolinas. The picture looks grim, with Florence set to make landfall as a very strong Category 4 storm packing sustained winds of 145 mph. Florence has nothing but warm water ahead of it, and there should be minimal impact ot this storm from vertical wind shear. Even if the storm weakens due to eyewall replacement cycles prior to landfall, that would only serve to increase the radius of its damaging winds. No matter how you slice it, Florence is likely to bring deadly storm surge and risk of life-threatening flash flooding and inland flooding. The fact that its forecast track slows to a crawl after landfall makes the flooding risk inland especially serious.

Hurricane Isaac

Isaac is a compact storm, which is leading to some uncertainty regarding both its track and intensity forecast. Small tropical cyclones are subject to wild swings in intensity both ways, which can be unpredictable at times. As of now, Isaac is forecast to cross the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles as a Category 1 storm, then continue into the Caribbean where hostile shear conditions should cause it to weaken. It is worth noting, despite the UKMET model being an outlier, that there are some signals that the storm could turn to the northwest later in the period, which could mean a threat to Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.

Hurricane Olivia

This storm continues to track towards Hawaii. Although weakening due to the influence of moderate wind shear, it is still set to hit Hawaii later this week as a strong tropical storm. The primary threat to Hawaii from Olivia will be in the form of heavy rain and flash flooding regardless of whether it makes direct landfall on one of the main islands.

NYC Weekend Weather – Sept 7, 2018

Cooler temperatures are finally upon us after a very hot and humid week. However, the cooler weather also brings a prolonged period of cloudy conditions, with chances for showers each day this weekend. Rain chances continue into the beginning of next week with a storm system approaching. Long-term, we look towards the tropics, as Tropical Storm Florence continues to have the potential for bringing some impacts to the area.

Rest of today – overcast, with much cooler high temperatures in the mid-70s. Chances for showers, especially later in the day.

Saturday – cloudy with high temperatures remain cool in the low-mid 70s with northeasterly onshore flow behind a cold front draped west-east south of us. This front (which passed through yesterday) will become stationary. Multiple impulses of energy will run along this boundary and allow for continued slight chances of showers.

Sunday – yet another cool, cloudy day with chances for rain. High temperatures around 70°F.

Monday – the stationary front stalled out south of us will return north as a warm front. As this happens, chances for rain increase, along with temperatures rising back into the mid-upper 70s.

Will Tropical Storm Florence Impact the East Coast?

Tropical Storm Florence has been active over the eastern and central North Atlantic for over a week now. Within the last few days, Florence underwent a rapid intensification that brought it up to Category 3 status, making it the first major hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season. Subsequently, it has weakened to a tropical storm under relentless strong shear. However, it is expected to reintensify into a major hurricane once shear subsides. Worrying trends in the track forecast for Florence continue to allow for the possibility of landfall on the East Coast, or at the very least, substantial coastal impacts like dangerous surf and beach erosion. However, the National Hurricane Center continues to note that there is considerable uncertainty to the track forecast for Florence, such that it is still too early to determine what effects it will have on the East Coast. This storm will warrant careful observation over the coming days and I will have subsequent updates on it.

NYC Weekend Weather – Aug 10, 2018

Enjoy the pleasant weather today if you can, because conditions will deteriorate going into the weekend. Wet weather will impact the NYC region starting tonight, lingering well into early next week. Rain could be heavy at times, and flash flooding is a possibility. Temperatures during this time will be considerably cooler than this past week with the influence of clouds and rain. We will be stuck under the influence of multiple shortwaves moving through at the upper level during this time. Starting next week, forecast models suggest that a closed 500 mb low will form, then linger in the area due to strong downstream ridging (high pressure) over the western North Atlantic. This cut-off upper level low will provide for persistent unstable conditions conducive for multiple rounds of rain and thunderstorms. I will be off the next two weeks on vacation and will not be posting updates unless there’s severe weather forecast for the area.

Rest of today – increasing clouds as a cold front approaches the area from the northwest but stalls out and dissipates overnight. High temperatures in the upper-80s. Chances for showers and thunderstorms increase overnight.

Saturday – multiple chances for showers and thunderstorms, starting early in the day, then again in the afternoon and evening hours. Much cooler with mostly cloudy skies and high temperatures only in the mid-70s. The cold front that passed through yesterday will return north as a warm front. Ahead of this, winds will be easterly and onshore, bringing the cool, damp influence of the Atlantic over the area.

Sunday – warmer with high temperatures in the low-80s but still mostly cloudy. Chances for rain throughout the day as the frontal boundary above remains in the area.

Monday – yet another impulse of shortwave energy aloft brings a surface low towards the area, so rain chances persist with a shot for thunderstorms as well. Mostly cloudy with highs in the low-80s.

NYC Weather Update – Jul 30, 2018

Yesterday and today have been a welcome relief from the recent spell of tropical humidity. However, the comfortable weather won’t last this week. A warm front will sweep through and bring us right back into an unsettled, tropical weather pattern. There will be chances for showers and thunderstorms every day this week. Humidity will be back on just as last week.

Rest of today – cloudy, with high temperatures topping out in the low-80s then dropping to the mid-70s by end of the day.

Tuesday – as a warm front nears from the south, there will be chances for showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. High temperatures will be capped in the low-80s due to southeasterly onshore flow off the Atlantic ahead of the warm front.

Wednesday – temperatures should be in the mid-upper 80s, depending on the timing of the warm front passing through. Chances for showers and thunderstorms yet again. Heavy downpours from slow moving storms could cause localized flooding. Dew points will increase into the low-70s resulting in an uncomfortably muggy day.

Thursday – behind the warm front, we’ll get into even warmer and more humid air due to the presence of a Bermuda High. A prefrontal trough associated with a cold front will approach the area and once again give us a chance for thunderstorms. High temperatures should be in the upper-80s.
