NYC Weather Update – Apr 24, 2018

This week started off with a gorgeous, sunny day with above average warmth. Temperatures will remain largely at or above normal, with the exception of tomorrow as a storm system rolls through and brings us some rain. The end of the week may also see a chance for showers, but this will set the stage for us to enjoy another weekend of sunny, above average warmth.

Rest of today – increasing clouds as a storm approaches from the southwest. This increasing cloud cover should result in high temperatures a few degrees cooler than yesterday, topping out in the mid-60s. Overrunning precipitation will begin to fall late overnight in association with a warm/occluded front approaching from the south.

Wednesday – rain, with a thunderstorm possible. Mostly cloudy, and cooler with highs in the mid-50s.

Thursday – partly sunny with high temperatures warming back into the mid-60s as the storm system above exits to our northeast.

Friday – partly sunny with high temperatures again in the mid-60s. A chance for rain with a weaker storm system moving up again from our south.

This work week starts off with a serious soaking rain from a storm system that has impacted a wide swath of the southern US with multiple days of severe weather. Conditions improve tomorrow and Wednesday before another chance for rain on Thursday. The rain this morning has led to the issuance of flash flood warnings, and numerous reports of flooding have already come in, so take caution out there, especially if you’re out on the roads.

Rest of today – rain, heavy at times, with the threat for flash flooding and flooding possible as storms train and hit the same areas repeatedly. Some embedded thunderstorms have been occurring this morning, enhancing the heavy rainfall potential. Some areas could see rainfall rates of up to 1″/hr along with gusty winds in the 40-50 mph range. Temperatures will be rising into the upper-50s as a warm front approaches from the south.

Tuesday – improving conditions as the storm system responsible for today’s rain moves off. Cooler, with temperatures maxing out in the low-50s in the wake of a cold front and mostly cloudy skies.

Wednesday – the best day of this week with high temperatures in the mid-50s and mostly sunny skies.

Thursday – another storm system, albeit weaker, will impact the area. High temperatures should hover in the mid-50s with chances for rain and cloudy skies otherwise.

 

NYC Weekend Weather – Apr 13, 2018

Despite it being Friday the 13th, if you were looking for some spring weather, this happens to be your lucky day. With our region in the warm sector of a large storm system far off to the south and west (which will bring severe weather to parts of the Mid-Mississippi and lower Missouri Valleys today), warm air will be surging from the south. This will give us a great start to the weekend, though things will shift dramatically by Sunday as a frontal boundary dances back and forth across the area. Wild temperature swings of 30ºF are possible with a much cooler day Sunday.

Rest of today – despite the cloud cover now, temperatures should still reach well into the mid-70s. Any breaks in the clouds would likely result in highs hitting 80ºF. There will also be a steady southerly breeze with gusts up to 20 mph.

Saturday – temperatures remain quite warm with highs again in the mid-70s. The warm front that swept north through the region last night, which brought the warm air along with it, will retreat south of the area as a backdoor cold front late during the day Saturday. Expect temperatures to drop rapidly after this backdoor cold front passes through – between 10-15ºF within as little as an hour. Increasing clouds will accompany this frontal passage.

Sunday – significantly cooler with easterly onshore winds in the wake of the backdoor cold front passage. This onshore flow off the still cold waters of the Atlantic will result in high temperatures only in the upper-40s. Periods of rain will also occur, especially later in the day with mostly cloudy skies otherwise.

Monday – the backdoor cold front will stall just south of us, then push back north as a warm front again. Temperatures will rise back towards around 60ºF prior to the arrival of a stronger cold front. This will be accompanied by steadier rain and even a couple rumbles of thunder are possible.

 

NYC Weather Update – Apr 2, 2018

I had trouble typing the date in the title of this post, given that there’s snow falling as I write this! Unfortunately, this snow is not a belated April Fool’s joke. Didn’t have time to post an update about this yesterday, sorry about that! I’ll also be out this weekend for weddings. Now on to the weather: look ahead to a week of up and downs in temperatures and active weather, but no more snow. The weekend coming up… well, there could be some chance for snow again Saturday.

Rest of today – snow departs the city by the lunch hour. Around 3″ of total accumulation, mostly on untreated surfaces, before the sun breaks out and starts immediately melting the stuff. High temperatures in the low-40s with decreasing clouds.

Tuesday – rain associated with an approaching warm front. Cloudy, with temperatures in the mid-40s. Overnight temperatures actually don’t go down much before warm air surges as we enter the warm sector of this second storm of the week.

Wednesday – more rain, this time with a chance for a rumble of thunder with decent lifting associated with the cold front that’s part of this storm. Significantly warmer, cloudy, with high temperatures around 60°F.

Thursday – much cooler behind the cold front, temperatures only in the upper-40s with mostly sunny skies.

NYC Weather Update – Mar 26, 2018

This will be the first week in almost a month that we don’t get a nor’easter that brings us snow. In fact, temperatures will trend upwards through the week. There’s a chance we could hit 60°F later in the week with some spring showers headed our way.

Rest of today – sunny, high temperatures in the mid-40s.

Tuesday – another bright, sunny day with temperatures a touch warmer around 50°F while high pressure remains firmly in control.

Wednesday – slight chance for rain, mostly cloudy with a frontal system approaching from the west but stalling. High temperatures around 50°F.

Thursday – mild, partly sunny, with high temperatures in the upper-50s behind a warm front.

 

NYC Weekend Weather – Feb 23, 2018

A wet and unsettled weekend is coming up for NYC after a week that saw record-breaking warmth and large temperature swings. Back-to-back mid-latitude cyclones with their attendant warm and cold fronts will move through the area bringing a cloudy, gloomy feel, and plenty of chances for rain.

Rest of today – multiple rounds of rain showers possible through the morning and afternoon hours ahead of a warm front advancing from the southwest. Rain chances diminishing after around 6PM this evening. Overcast otherwise with a high temperature in the low-40s.

Saturday – overnight temperatures warming due to warm advection ahead of that warm front. We’ll end up in the warm sector of the first of these two mid-latitude cyclones on Saturday with high temperatures rising into the mid-upper 50s under mostly cloudy skies. Some chance for a scattered shower more likely later in the day as some post-frontal rain develops with a cold front exiting to the east.

Sunday – slightly cooler, high temperatures in the upper-40s. Another cloudy day, with rain continuing from overnight Saturday as first a warm front then a cold front moves through with this second storm system.

Monday – finally a dry day with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid-50s after this chain of storms!

Cold start to this weekend gives way to a milder feel but a soaker of a day Sunday. Going into next week, much of the week will see above average temperatures.

Rest of today – increasing low-level clouds associated with warm air advecting from the south ahead of a warm front. Temperatures still on the cool side during the day with high temperatures in the mid-30s.

Saturday – overnight temperatures actually start to rise as warm advection really takes hold. High temperatures will substantially warmer near 50°F. Cloudy with increasing chances for rain as a cold front approaches from the west.

Sunday – the cold front above will stall in our vicinity, with tropical moisture surging along this frontal boundary. This will result in multiple rounds of moderate to heavy rain. Temperatures will be in the low-50s.

Monday – cooler but still decent with decreasing clouds and high temperatures in the mid-40s.

NYC Weekend Weather – Feb 2, 2017

The groundhogs have spoken. Our own Staten Island Chuck predicts an early spring, while his more famous counterpart Punxsutawney Phil predicts 6 more weeks of winter. Well, it certainly won’t feel like spring this coming weekend as we endure chilly conditions today and tomorrow before a slight warm up with a chance for precipitation Sunday.

Rest of today – clear, but windy with a northwest breeze 20-25 mph range. This will quickly sweep in much colder Arctic air via cold advection, and as a result temperatures will drop through the day from a high around 30°F.

Saturday – with overnight lows dropping into the teens, Saturday will likewise be a cold day with high temperatures only reaching around 30°F. Clouds will increase as the warm front associated with the next area of low pressure to hit the area moves in late in the day.

Sunday – with the warm front passing over us, winds turn to the southwest and warm advection will result in temperatures warming overnight into Sunday when high temperatures are expected to reach the low-40s. Precipitation in association with the cold front attached to the low pressure below will likely begin as all snow in the city before transitioning to a rain/snow mix or all rain with temperatures rising well above freezing. Little to no snow accumulation is expected – but the journey to and back from various Super Bowl related festivities will be messy.

Monday – things dry out and conditions improve as temperatures top out in the upper-30s with partly cloudy skies.

 

Chuck’s Wrong, Phil’s Right

Unfortunately for those of you who like warmer weather, Staten Island Chuck’s prediction of an early spring is likely to be off the mark. A progressive series of storm systems and an oscillating jet stream will bring multiple bouts of cold weather to the area before the winter’s out. Climate Prediction Center has our region in an area of 33% chance for below normal temperatures in their monthly outlook.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jan 26, 2018

We follow the general pattern of last weekend with a warm up occurring, accompanied by some rain on Sunday. Temperatures cool off again to begin next week. Snow is possible late Monday into early Tuesday.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with highs in the mid-30s. A warm front pushes through and winds shift to the southwest, setting the stage for much warmer temperatures over the weekend.

Saturday – a gem of a day with high temperatures in and around 50°F and sunny skies.

Sunday – showers as a cold front pushes through. Temperatures still warm in and around 50°F. Mostly cloudy otherwise. 

Monday – temperatures cool back off into the low-40s after the passage of the cold front bringing rain on Sunday.

NYC Christmas Weekend Weather – Dec 21, 2017

Those of you hoping for a white Christmas will be disappointed to know that we’ll instead probably be getting a rainy weekend. There is still some small chance for snow mixed with rain Christmas Day, but the white stuff won’t be sticking. While temperatures will warm up this first weekend of the official start of winter, they will plummet considerably after Christmas. Looking into long-range forecast models, there are some indications for what could be winter storms for the first couple weekends of January.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with some thin clouds, but cool with high temperatures in about 40°F.

Saturday – overnight into tomorrow, a warm front will be pushing through associated with the first of two storms affecting the area this holiday weekend. Light rain will precede this frontal passage overnight, then warmer air and steadier precipitation should affect the area during the day Saturday. High temperatures will be much warmer, around 50°F.

Sunday – once the cold front depicted above moves through, we will get a calm day on Sunday with high temperatures dropping back into the mid-40s with mostly sunny skies.

Monday (Christmas Day) – another area of low pressure will develop along the cold front that pushes into the Atlantic. This low will track close enough to the Northeast to bring some chance for a passing snow shower early in the day Monday with much colder air rushing in from the northwest. High temperatures should be in the low-40s.
