NYC Weather Update – Dec 18, 2017

A brief warm up takes place to start this week before temperatures cool of back to seasonal norms. No precipitation anticipated at least until the weekend. At this point it does not look like a white Christmas is in the cards as temperature trends are pointing warmer leading into the weekend

Rest of today – partly sunny with high temperatures in the mid-40s.

Tuesday – a dry warm front passes through. Winds shift to the southwest behind this and temperatures should hit the mid-50s with warm air flowing into the area.

Wednesday – a trailing cold front pushes through, again, no precipitation is anticipated. High temperatures cooling back off into the mid-40s with mostly sunny skies.

Thursday – continued cooling trend with high temperatures in the upper-30s and sunny skies.

 

NYC Weekend Weather – Dec 15, 2017

A very cold start to the weekend with light snow accumulations will give way to a warming trend that carries over to the beginning of next week. During this time, we’ll see temperatures go from much below average to above average.

Rest of today – snow beginning around 2PM today and lasting through the evening rush hour with generally 1-2″ of accumulations expected in the city. Cloudy otherwise with high temperatures holding steady in the upper-20s to around 30ºF. The cause of the snow is a strengthening coastal low. This low will pass close enough that a shield of decent snowfall hits the area for several hours this afternoon.

Saturday – another cold night with overnight lows in the mid-20s in the city before sunny conditions help propel temperatures into the upper-30s.

Sunday – very similar day to Saturday with high temperatures again in the upper-30s and mostly sunny conditions.

Monday – chance of light rain/snow mix overnight due to a passing warm front. Behind the warm front, temperatures reach well into the mid-40s with partly sunny skies.

NYC Weather Update – Dec 11, 2017

We got our first round of snow of the winter season in NYC this past weekend, with snowfall totals generally between 2-4″ from the event. We open this week with another chance for precipitation, but this time more likely in a mixed mode. An arctic blast hits for the mid-week period before yet another storm system brings our next chance of snow and rain Friday.

Rest of today – mostly sunny, cool, with high temperatures slightly below normal around 40°F.

Tuesday – a low pressure system moving east from the Great Lakes will impact the region with a mix of rain and snow. This time around we’ll be on the warm side of the storm, so we’ll likely see mostly rain at the coast. A warm front will pass through overnight. Temperatures will rise into the upper-40s in the warm sector for tomorrow. Precipitation most likely will occur in the morning. Mostly cloudy otherwise.

Wednesday – as this low pressure tracks into the Canadian Maritimes and deepens, a strengthening pressure gradient on its back side will lead to much colder and windier conditions. High temperatures will struggle to reach the freezing mark with partly sunny skies after a very cold night with low temperatures in the low-20s. Stiff west winds 20-25 mph with stronger gusts will make wind chills feel much colder.

Thursday – another cold day with high temperatures only around the freezing mark and partly sunny skies.

NYC Weather Update – Dec 4, 2017

The biggest weather headline for the beginning to mid-week period will be the passage of a warm front and then a robust cold front. This will bring us a dramatic swing in temperatures along with moderate to heavy rain overnight Tuesday. Late in the week, our eyes turn towards a developing coastal low, with temperatures well within the range to support snow, there’s a chance for us to see our first accumulating snows of the season this weekend.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with high temperatures around 50°F. High pressure remains in control during the day while it moves offshore.

Tuesday – cloudy with much warmer high temperatures nearing 60°F behind the passage of a warm front in the early morning hours. We’ll be in the warm sector of a low that will be centered well north of us in Ontario, and warm air will flow in from the southwest ahead of a cold front. Rain chances increasing during the day, with the best chances for rain starting in the afternoon. Rain continues overnight, moderate to heavy at times.

Wednesday – rain chances continue into the morning. Clearing conditions, with winds turning to the winds once the cold front clears our area. High temperatures peak at around 50°F but fall during the day.

Thursday – noticeably colder, with overnight lows in the low-30s. High temperatures in the mid-40s, a couple degrees cooler than normal for this time of year.

 

Weekend Snow?

Model runs over the past couple days suggest the possibility for multiple storm systems that could bring snow over the weekend. The more significant of these would be a possible coastal storm. However, the latest model runs suggest this storm would take a track too far offshore to affect us with significant precipitation. A second, weaker disturbance could move through Sunday as well. Temperatures will definitely be cold enough to support snow, especially during overnight hours. Later in the week, we should see clearer signals about whether we’ll get our first accumulating snow this season during the weekend.

NYC Weekend Weather – Nov 17, 2017

A cool Friday and Friday night yields to a rainy, though milder weekend. A return to largely below normal temperatures to start the week. Looking ahead into next week, weather conditions should be fair and without disruptions for the busy travel days around Thanksgiving.

Rest of today – sunny, cool and windy with high temperatures in the upper-40s. Northwest winds 15-20 mph with higher gusts though diminishing as the day progresses.

Saturday – increasing clouds as a warm front attached to a low pressure center over the Great Lakes approaches the area. Increasing clouds as winds shift to a warmer and wetter southerly direction. Chances for rain increasing through the day, with mostly cloudy skies otherwise and high temperatures in the upper-50s.

Sunday – rain chances are highest overnight from Saturday into Sunday. Low temperatures should be on the warm side near 50°F. Rain continues into Sunday morning prior to the passage of the cold front pictured above. Once that cold front pushes through, clouds should gradually break. High temperatures are anticipated to reach in the mid-50s again. However, on the back side of the cold front, we’ll see fairly strong winds returning from the northwest with a large pressure gradient. This will lead to temperatures dropping back into the 40s by the evening.

Monday – sunny skies but much cooler again with high temperatures in the mid-40s.

NYC Weekend Weather – Nov 3, 2017

This weekend’s weather will be a tale of contrasting temperatures and airmasses. The week ends with warm temperatures more than 10°F above normal. A cold front sweeps through and fall returns for the weekend itself, but another warm up takes place leading into Monday. Also, Daylight Saving Time ends at 2AM Sunday.

Rest of today – increasing clouds for the day. Warm with high temperatures in the mid-70s. Yesterday, a warm front pushed through, putting us in the warm sector associated with a low pressure now over northeastern Quebec.

Saturday – quite a different feel tomorrow once this cold front below moves through the area. Winds will become onshore from the east, bring much cooler air. High temperatures are expected to top out only in the upper-50s with sunny skies (around normal for this time of year).

Sunday – there’s a chance of showers overnight Saturday into Sunday associated with the next storm system to impact the area. An advancing warm front is expected to bring light, stratiform rain ahead of it. Temperatures will be warmer, in the mid-60s with mostly cloudy skies.

Monday – the familiar pattern of warm front followed by cold front continues Monday. We’ll again be in the warm sector with temperatures peaking at about 70°F. Rain should accompany the passage of this cold front.

NYC Weekend Weather – Columbus Day – Oct 6, 2017

The first half of this long weekend will continue the warm summer feel we’ve had since mid-week. Some much needed rain arrives Sunday going into next week in conjunction with the anticipated remnants of Tropical Storm Nate. This does literally mean that it will rain on the Columbus Day parade.

Rest of today – mostly sunny. Warm with highs around 80°F.

Saturday – partly sunny, not a bad day though with high temperatures in the low-80s. The stationary front depicted above that’s sitting close to the city will push north of us as a warm front. This will open the door to an increasingly tropical feel with higher dew points and more moisture in the air.

 

Sunday – mostly cloudy. Rain chances increasing in the afternoon with thunderstorms possible. Rain that develops could be heavy with tropical moisture flowing into the area. Still warm, with temperatures in the low-80s. An advancing cold front will push up precipitation partially fueled by Tropical Storm Nate (which is anticipated to make landfall on the New Orleans/Mississippi coastal area this weekend. This precipitation will be moving in on our area well in advance of the actual core of the remnants of Nate.

Monday (Columbus Day) – rain and thunderstorms as the bulk of the remnants of Nate move into the area. Rain heavy at times. Cooler with highs dipping into the mid-70s. With Nate approaching to the southwest of us, we should see more steady rain and clouds, keeping temperatures suppressed.

 

Tropical Storm Nate

Tropical Storm Nate is expected to strengthen into a minimal hurricane after it crosses near or over the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula this weekend and into the Gulf of Mexico. From that point, it’s expected to accelerate towards the Gulf Coast and make landfall in the vicinity of New Orleans, the Mississippi Delta and coastal Mississippi. Even though this storm will pale in comparison to Irma and Maria, it has already claimed 20 lives in Central America due to heavy rains and flooding.

 

NYC Weekend Weather – Aug 4, 2017

A hot week transitions into a weekend that will see the end of the heat and humidity for at least half of next week and maybe longer. Rain and thunderstorms dot the forecast except appropriately Sunday.

Rest of today – partly sunny with high temperatures in the mid-80s. The rain and thunderstorms this morning give way to a dry day otherwise.

Saturday – a warm front moves through overnight into the morning with a cold front following right on its heels. This will bring a period thunderstorms producing heavy rain at times. Marginally favorable atmospheric conditions could spawn a few strong storms. Clouds clear up in the afternoon and highs are expected to reach normal levels in the mid-80s.

Sunday – cooler, drier air moves in behind the cold front Saturday. High pressure builds to the south and west and moves south sending cooler Canadian air around its periphery towards us. High temperatures will be comfortable around 80°F with lots of sun.

Monday – a weak disturbance brings rain and cooler temperatures, well below average only in the mid-upper 70s.

Trouble in the Tropics?

A vigorous tropical wave has spun up off the west African coast and Cabo Verde. Storms originating from this region have historically been some of the most powerful and damaging, but that’s if they can sustain the transit across the Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center has this wave at a 50% of forming into a tropical depression or storm in 2 days, and 80% chance in 5 days. It’s worrying that it’s starting to get picked up on long-term GFS model runs taking a swipe at the US East Coast as a strong tropical cyclone, however, this far out, it’s difficult to say which one of many scenarios could play out. It does bear monitoring though.

NYC Weather Update – Jul 10, 2017

This week’s weather will be dictated by a frontal boundary that will dwell in our vicinity, giving rise to multiple days when we could see rain. A warm, humid, tropical airmass will be in place, which adds the potential for heavy rain and maybe some localized flooding. To top it off, Tuesday also holds a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with high temperatures around normal in the low-80s. A warm front lifting northwards brings a noticeably muggier feel later on.

Tuesday – we will be firmly inside the warm sector, wedged between the warm front mentioned above and an advancing cold front. A prefrontal trough will provide the best dynamics for thunderstorm initiation. Storms that do form will have ample energy to feed off, though less so over areas east of the Hudson under a marine influence. Mostly cloudy otherwise, warm and humid with high temperatures in the mid-80s.

Wednesday – partly sunny, with chances for showers. Highs in the mid-upper 80s depending how much sun we see.

Thursday – another day where we could see rumbles of thunder and rain, mostly cloudy and warm again with highs in the mid-80s.

NYC Weekend Weather Update – Jun 16, 2017

What a difference a week makes. Since Wednesday, we’ve seen temperatures slide from record heat in some places. An unsettled weather pattern takes hold through the weekend and into next week with chances for showers and thunderstorms each day.

Rest of today – Cloudy, temperatures on the cool side with high temperatures only in the low-70s. Multiple chances for mainly showery precipitation with a warm front slowly creeping towards us. Two primary batches of rain look to affect the area around noon then again in the late evening around 10pm.

Saturday – the warm front mentioned above should push through, but could be slow to do so which would result in a lower high temperature like today as opposed to the upper-70s. Both before and after the warm front passage there’s a chance for scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Generally mostly cloudy.

Sunday – we’ll be in the warm sector between the exiting warm front and an approaching cold front. High temperatures will respond by climbing into the mid-80s. Could start the day off with scattered showers. The majority of the day looks rain-free though cloudy. Not a total washout for Father’s Day, but not ideal either.

Monday – the cold front pushes through late in the day. High temperatures again in the low-mid 80s. There’s some possibility for strong to severe thunderstorms with associated with this cold front. Plenty of moisture in the atmosphere would easily yield some heavy downpours as well.
