NYC Weekend Weather – Jul 28, 2016

We finally get a break from the heat along with some much needed rain in the next few days. Saturday looks to be the best day of the weekend. High temperatures this weekend will range anywhere between 15-20ºF cooler than last weekend.

Overnight – lows in the mid-70s as a low pressure center passes almost directly over NYC. Because the low will be right over us, the main area of the heaviest rain will remain north of the city.

Friday – showers punctuated by periods of steady, heavier rain as bands of rain develop and wrap around the low pressure center as it tracks east. High temperatures in the low-80s with overcast skies. This low pressure system will thrive off the humid, tropical airmass in place over the region. A flash flood watch has been issued to reflect the possibility of some areas receiving 1-2″/hour rains. Embedded thunderstorms are possible, but are unlikely to reach severe limits. The bulk of the rain will fall overnight into the morning hours, and should begin tapering off in the afternoon from west to east.

Saturday – high pressure passes briefly giving us a mostly dry day with partly sunny skies with highs in the mid-80s.

Sunday – another disturbance pushes through from the south providing more chances for rain and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy with highs in the low-80s otherwise.

Monday – skies gradually clear and temperatures warm back into the low-mid 80s.

Tuesday – warm and sunny with highs again in the mid-80s

Drought Conditions Forecast to Persist

Despite the rains this weekend, many parts of the area remain under a moderate drought, having received only about 25% of normal precipitation for this past month. The outlook for the season calls for persistence of drought conditions as below normal to normal precipitation will be insufficient to break the drought.

This weekend’s weather can be summed up in one word: hot. In fact, if current forecasts hold, this upcoming stretch may see our first extended 90ºF+ heat wave. High temperatures don’t appear likely to drop below 90ºF until next Wednesday. During that time, the humidity will actually increase until a cold front breaks through late Tuesday. This will be another prime beach/upstate getaway weekend.

Rest of today – sunny with a high around 90ºF.

Friday – mostly sunny, slightly warmer with a high in the low-90s. There is a chance for strong to marginally severe thunderstorms late Friday with the passage of a cold front. Any relief from heat that this front and storms associated with it bring will be short-lived.

Saturday – high pressure quickly returns and temperatures continue to rise along with it. Highs are expected in the mid-90s with mostly sunny skies.

Sunday – a bit cooler, but humidity will increase as a warm front pushes through late on Sunday. High temperatures in the low-90s.

Monday – showers and thunderstorms are possible later Monday preceding a cold front that is forecast to pass on Tuesday. Highs will remain in the low-90s.

Above Average Temperatures to Stick Around

The Climate Prediction Center’s 6-10 Day and 8-14 Day temperature outlook continues to call for above normal temperatures. The heat is here to stay.

NYC Independence Day Weekend Weather – Jun 30, 2016

The holiday weekend ahead will be picture perfect for nearly any type of outdoor activity, with the caveat that it will start off with some stormy weather on Friday evening/night. This batch of storms may impact travelers as they make their getaway from the city, but once they pass, the rest of the weekend will be a real gem. Any fireworks displays not scheduled for Friday night should go off without a hitch.

Rest of today – warm with a light breeze from the northwest, less humid, high in the mid-80s with sunny conditions.

Friday – mostly cloudy, high around 80ºF, increasing chance for showers and thunderstorms especially toward the afternoon and evening hours. Some of these storms could produce gusty winds. Storms continue into early overnight hours.

Saturday – sunny, high in the low-80s.

Sunday – clone of Saturday, high in the low-80s. High pressure begins to dominate the weather over the region.

Monday (Independence Day) – another sunny, spotless day, with highs in the low-80s.

NYC Weather Update – Jun 20, 2016

We couldn’t have asked for better weather this past weekend, and Sunday in particular was a real gem for all the fathers who had outdoor plans. The run of nice weather gets a couple interruptions this week for some much needed rain, with the first half of the week heating up before a cool down mid-week.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low-80s. Today also marks the first official day of summer, which begins at 6:34PM EDT. For the first time in 70 years, the summer solstice will also coincide with a full moon.

Tuesday – a cold front pushes through overnight into Tuesday. There could be some showers/thunderstorms in the early morning hours, but these are unlikely to linger much beyond daybreak. Once the frontal boundary clears, winds pick up inland from the west, ushering in a warmer, though less humid airmass. Temperatures should rise steadily into the upper-80s to near 90ºF in a couple spots under clearing and mostly sunny skies.

Wednesday – pleasant, sunny, with high temperatures in the mid-80s.

Thursday – the next chance at rain comes with a low pressure system moving during the afternoon hours Thursday. Uncertainty remains as to the exact track of this incoming storm system. A southerly track would result in less potential for severe weather/flash flooding, and this is the scenario that forecast models seem to suggest now. Either way, it will be a cooler day with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper-70s, with a chance for showers and thunderstorms later in the day into the overnight hours.

Friday – much improved conditions with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low-80s.

Drought Worsens, Likely to Persist this Summer

The continued lack of significant rainfall this Spring has led to increasingly dry soil. The US drought monitor now has some regions of the Northeast in an area of moderate drought. The outlook for the summer suggests that the drought will persist, without much improvement.

We’ve had a week of fairly mixed weather, with some days that saw thunderstorms, but a fair mix of sunny and dry conditions also. This weekend, we get another mixed bag, with a possibility of thunderstorms approaching severe limits Saturday, and a great day on Sunday. Looking ahead, high pressure begins to dominate and will ensure dry weather for the coming week.

Rest of today – we’ve hit our high in the mid-upper 70s, and we’ll continue to have sunny weather, and it’ll be a pleasant night with lows in the upper-50s to around 60ºF.

Saturday – the Storm Prediction Center has placed our area under a slight risk of severe weather for Saturday. We could see some thunderstorms rumble through in the afternoon hours as a warm front pushes in from the west, however, they will be weakening as they approach more stable air near the coast, so it’s possible these storms fizzle out before they reach the city. These storms will be moving from northeast to southeast from the interior of Upstate New York. Otherwise, expect partly sunny skies with highs in the upper-70s.

Sunday – winds pick up behind the passage of the warm front mentioned above. Temperatures also warm up into the low-80s with sunny skies.

Monday – mostly sunny with high temperatures in the upper-70s. High pressure begins to take control over our weather.

Tuesday – much the same as Monday, pleasant, mostly sunny, with high temperatures in the upper-70s.

NYC Weather Update – Jun 7, 2016

After a couple of warm days to start the week, temperatures cool off as a cold front moves through later this evening. A second frontal boundary passes through tomorrow, ushering even cooler, and dry weather for the remainder of the week. Another chance for rain is possible Saturday as a weak Alberta clipper system impacts the area.

Rest of today – mostly sunny with a high in the low-mid 80s. There is a possibility for scattered showers and thunderstorms especially inland later this afternoon between 3-5PM as a cold front approaches from the west. Some of these storms could produce damaging wind gusts and small hail, but these are unlikely to impact the city and coastal areas where the air mass is more stable due to the influence cool ocean waters.

Wednesday – with the cold front having passed through, temperatures cool off into the low-70s. The day starts out sunny but clouds will increase ahead of another frontal boundary nears in the afternoon. Ahead of this boundary, a better chance for showers and thunderstorms develops, and once again there could be some widely scattered strong-marginally severe storms.

Thursday – temperatures will range in the 50s overnight into Thursday, leading to yet another day of below average, but comfortable temperatures in the low-70s with northwest wind driven by high pressure building to the southwest over the Mississippi Valley. This will pull in a drier, fall-like airmass from Canada.

Friday – slightly warmer with highs in the low-mid 70s, mostly sunny.

Saturday – there’s a chance for some scattered showers Saturday afternoon into the overnight hours as an Alberta clipper system approaches, otherwise, partly sunny with high temperatures in the mid-70s.

NYC Weekend Weather – May 14, 2016

We have a stretch of decent weather ahead of us going into the early part of next week despite some rain. Rain comes this evening, and is possible Sunday. Windy conditions prevail Monday.

Rest of today – high temperature will be mild in the low-mid 70s with winds from the south. Later this evening, around 6PM, we should see a line of showers with some moderate or strong thunderstorms possible ahead of a cold front passing through. This batch of rain should push through by 9PM.

Sunday – will be about 10ºF cooler with breezy west winds under mostly sunny skies. Clouds build in the afternoon with a slight chance for rain in the evening.

Monday – breezy west winds continue with a pressure gradient between a low pressure center over eastern Canada and high pressure to the south. Sunny, with high temperatures in the low-60s.

Tuesday – a few degrees warmer with highs in the mid-upper 60s, partly-mostly skies, and less wind.

NYC Weather Update – Apr 26, 2016

There is a potential for strong to severe thunderstorms today, especially for areas south and west of the city today. Stormy weather gives way to calmer, cooler conditions Wednesday before another round of rain moves in late Thursday. Cooler temperatures prevail in the short to medium term.

Rest of today – the Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of the region under a marginal to slight risk of severe weather today. These areas are largely confined to those south and west of the city. A frontal boundary is draped from west to east across the area, such that portions to the east will be in colder air north of the frontal boundary, while those areas to the west will be in a warmer area south of it. Any strong to severe thunderstorms will be confined to areas that see the warmest temperatures today, where the spread in high temperatures could be over 25ºF from eastern Long Island to Central New Jersey.

In the city, expect high temperatures in the upper-60s to low-70s with a potential for thunderstorms, some possibly with damaging winds and small hail. These storms will be coming in two rounds, one around 11AM this morning (radar returns are already showing this batch of weaker showers), and the second, stronger batch coming around 3PM.

Wednesday – temperatures cool off considerably in the wake of these storms. High temperatures will be around 60ºF tomorrow with sunny skies.

Thursday – another cool day with high temperatures in the upper-50s and increasing clouds along with an increasing chance of rain during the day into the overnight hours.

Friday – high temperatures in the upper-50s to around 60ºF with partly sunny skies.

Below Normal Temperature Trend to Continue – Rain Needed

An upcoming series of storm systems moving over the region will lead to colder air being pulled in behind them. This will result in below normal temperatures for this time of year throughout much of the next two weeks.

Due to a long stretch of dry weather, many portions of the NYC region have fallen behind normal precipitation levels for this period of the year by considerable margins. Hopefully, the rounds of rain we are forecast to receive coming up will help to prevent drought conditions from redeveloping in the area before this growing season starts in earnest.

NYC Weather Update – Dec 14, 2015

Temperatures remain very warm to start the week, following a weekend of recording-breaking warm weather this past weekend. However, a true cooldown into temperatures within normal ranges for this time of year (high temperatures in the mid-40s) won’t occur until late this week. When that cool down comes around, we could even be looking at a few snow flurries!

Rest of today – widespread fog has taken hold across the region. Fog is expected to lift by around noon, however, generally cloudy conditions are likely to persist through the afternoon. Warm again with high temperatures in the low-mid 60s – higher if clouds break in any areas inland. Later this evening, we get our best shot at a round of showers and even a couple embedded thunderstorms as a cold front pushes through. Timing for this precipitation looks to be around 8PM this evening.

Tuesday – behind the cold front, skies will clear, giving us a much brighter, but also windier day Tuesday. Still, temperatures remain warm, with highs again approaching the low-mid 60s.

Wednesday – cooler temperatures finally kick in with high temperatures dropping into the mid-50s under mostly sunny skies.

Thursday – a secondary surface low will form over the Southeast, associated with a stronger low pressure that will be over the Hudson Bay area. This low brings us our next chance at precipitation, and will yield a mostly cloudy day, with increasing chances for rain in the afternoon as the day progresses.

NYC Weather Update – Nov 16, 2015

This week will feature a mixed bag of warm and cool temperatures, along with a bout of moderate-heavy rain and even a couple thunderstorms associated with a cold front passing through the region on Thursday into Friday. Timing of this frontal passage isn’t 100% certain at this point. However, it is clear that behind this front, temperatures will take a dive into more seasonable ranges in the upper-40s to around 50ºF by this weekend.

Rest of today – clear skies with a high temperature well into the mid-60s. This is due in part to high pressure to our south that’s allowing for warm air to flow in from the west.

Tuesday – quite a different story in terms of temperatures. A backdoor cold front pushes through overnight, leading to a shift in winds to the northeast by tomorrow. This wind pattern favors cooler temperatures as the winds circulating clockwise around a high pressure center over the Canadian Maritimes bring in a cooler airmass. High temperatures will struggle to hit 50ºF in this atmosphere.

Wednesday – temperatures quickly rebound as winds switch back to the south-southeast ahead of a cold front which will be passing through the area sometime late Thursday. Cloud should increase during the day, but enough sun should still get through to get temperatures back to near 60.

Thursday – a mostly cloudy day with periods of rain throughout looks to be the headline for Thursday. Temperatures should warm up nicely into the mid-60s with warm, moist air entering the area from the south ahead of the actual cold front. Periods of heavy rain at times could be accompanied by an occasional thunderstorm especially as the cold front nears.
