NYC Weather Update – Aug 27, 2018

The dog days of summer arrive in full force this week before we close out the month of August. With a strong Bermuda high in place well southeast and secondary high pressure in the area, we will see a heat wave take place from today into Thursday. Several days of hot, humid weather are on tap until a cold front moves through Thursday, bringing the potential for strong thunderstorms and much cooler air in its wake.

Rest of today – hot, though not quite as humid as it will be later this week. High temperatures in the low-90s with mostly sunny skies expected.

Tuesday – even hotter, and more humid than today with high temperatures in the mid-90s with sunny skies.

Wednesday – yet another hot, oppressively humid day with high temperatures in the mid-90s. Both Tuesday and Wednesday should see heat index values above 100°F due to high dew point values as well.

Thursday – a cold front is forecast to push through the area Thursday. Along and ahead of this front, we are expecting the chance for some scattered strong to severe thunderstorms given the ample moisture available and hot temperatures. Temperatures will still be hot, in the low-90s, before this frontal boundary passes through. Behind this cold front, temperatures will be 10-15°F cooler Friday into the weekend.

NYC Weather Update – Aug 6, 2018

This week starts off with a heat wave, with high temperatures expected to top 90°F up through Wednesday. A chance or showers and thunderstorms Wednesday will not bring too much in the way of relief from the heat and humidity. The air mass behind the cold front moving in Wednesday is only slightly cooler and less humid than the one in place now.

Rest of today – hot, humid, with high temperatures in the low-mid 90s.

Tuesday – more of the same, hot, humid weather with highs in the low-90s. A chance exists for some scattered showers and thunderstorms late in the day.

Wednesday – more organized showers and thunderstorms are expected to pass though late in the day Wednesday and overnight into Thursday as a cold front approaches from the west. High temperatures ahead of the front are expected to be in the low-90s again.

Thursday – a chance for leftover a shower or thunderstorm exists early, then improving conditions with high temperatures in the upper-80s and mostly sunny skies.

Friday – looking sunny now, with highs in the upper-80s.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jun 29, 2018

Just as we get ready for the week of Independence Day, the heat really gets turned on. We anticipate the first heatwave of the summer with temperatures in excess of 90°F expected for the next 5 days. This will be an exceptional weekend for a beach getaway!

Rest of today – sunny, and hot, with high temperatures generally a touch or two above 90°F.

Saturday – heat increasing, sunny, with high temperatures in the mid-90s. Humidity also builds.

Sunday – hottest day of the weekend as robust south-southwesterly flow around a high pressure center to our south pumps lots of hot, humid air our way. High temperatures in the upper-90s.

Monday – still no relief, with high temperatures in the mid-90s and sunny skies.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jun 15, 2018

A cool start to this weekend will give way to some of the hottest temperatures we’ve seen in a while. We could have a weekend of entirely dry weather for the first time in over 2 months. We could even see a heat wave to start next week.

Rest of today – the headline of the weekend is a dominant area of of high pressure. Today, while the center of the high pressure sits off to our west, we’ll experience cooler temperatures in the mid-70s with mostly sunny skies and northerly winds.

Saturday – the warm up will begin with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s as the center of the high pressure center dominating our weather continues to move east.

Sunday – by Sunday, the center of this high will be to our southeast. This will result in very warm air flowing clockwise around the western periphery of the high, giving us temperatures in the low-90s and sunny skies. Great beach weather! A mid-level disturbance could touch off a couple isolated thunderstorms, more likely inland during the overnight hours.

Monday – the hot weather continues with temperatures in the mid-90s and mostly sunny skies.

NYC Weather Update – Jun 12, 2017

Main weather headline for the start of the week remains the heat and humidity. We’re in day two of the second heat wave of the year. Luckily for us, relief is not far off, with a cold front moving through Tuesday, a distinct change in airmasses will bring much cooler temperatures for the balance of the week.

Rest of today – sunny, hot, humid, high temperatures ranging from the low-mid 90s across the area with heat index values in the upper-90s. Air quality alert is in effect for high levels of ozone. The only relief from the heat will be on immediate south-facing shores that benefit from a sea breeze.

Tuesday – much the same as today to start off, with temperatures in the low-mid 90s and very humid again. Overnight temperatures going into Tuesday will be quite mild as well. There is a possibility later in the afternoon for a few scattered strong to severe thunderstorms that may pop up ahead of a cold front pushing through.

Wednesday – much cooler and less humid in the wake of the passing cold front. We will feel the cooling relief of a northeasterly wind as a high pressure center over southeastern Canada becomes the primary factor for our sensible weather. Temperatures will top out near 80ºF with mostly sunny skies.

Thursday – temperatures cool off even more into the mid-70s with increasing clouds.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jun 9, 2017

Got retrained as a SKYWARN spotter last night – this weekend should be tranquil though. A steady warming trend begins this weekend and lasts through mid-week next week. After a prolonged period of cool and unsettled weather, we could see the second heatwave of the season. Great weekend for a getaway to the beach!

Rest of today – mostly sunny, temperatures in the upper-70s to around 80º. Some residual instability in the wake of a low pressure center exiting the Northeast may touch off a couple isolated showers or thunderstorms.

Saturday – the warmup continues with temperatures climbing into the low-80s. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible again in the afternoon hours with the passage of an upper level disturbance.

Sunday – the heat arrives in earnest as a Bermuda high sets up and begins to strengthen. This will begin pumping in warmer and more humid air from the south and southwest. Temperatures are expected to climb into the low-90s in the city with sunny skies, with cooler temperatures due to the sea breeze on south-facing shores in the mid-80s. Great beach day, and ideal conditions for the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Monday – the heat continues with temperatures again in the low-90s with some spots in the mid-90s and sunny skies. There could be a heat advisory up at some point.

NYC Weekend Weather – Jul 7, 2016

The end of this week will likely see the first official heat wave of the year, typically defined as 3 or more days with 90ºF+ temperatures. The hot and humid weather comes to a close this weekend as a backdoor cold front brings relief by Sunday. A couple rounds of active weather could crop up this afternoon and again Friday night.

Rest of today – hot, humid, with a high in the low-90s. Periods of clouds and sun with increasing clouds this afternoon. The area is under a flash flood watch due to the impending onset of showers and thunderstorms capable of generating heavy downpours of 1-2″/hour. You can see from the satellite image below that discrete, pulse type storms are already building. Coverage of these storms will increase and they will encounter conditions conducive for strengthening, with plenty of moisture in the atmosphere, no capping to speak of, and lots of sunshine leading to MLCAPE values between 1000-1500 J/Kg. Storms should die down by later this evening. If you’re out and about, carry an umbrella because you may get dumped on.

Friday – any relief from the heat from the storms today will unfortunately be short-lived. Temperatures Friday are expected to rise into the low-90s once again under mostly sunny skies. Friday night, as a backdoor cold front the northeast (so-called because it moves from northeast to southwest, the opposite of most cold fronts in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere), we could see another round of showers and thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain across the area.

Saturday – with the backdoor cold front slowly progressing through the area during the day, some potential exists for scattered thunderstorms. Temperatures will be more comfortable in the mid-80s with mostly sunny skies otherwise.

Sunday – mostly sunny with a high in the mid-80s. Best day of the weekend!

NYC Weather Update – Aug 31, 2015

A heat wave is on for the end of August, and will persist into the beginning of September. A hot, humid tropical airmass will be firmly in control through out the early and mid-week period before we get some heat relief late in the week. The hot temperatures and a lack of widespread precipitation may allow drought to redevelop in some parts of the region, and worsen over Long Island.

Rest of today – possibly the hottest day of the week, with temperatures in the low-mid 90s inland despite some cloud cover and uncomfortable humidity levels.

USA_East

Tuesday – a weak backdoor cold front pushes through overnight, although no precipitation is anticipated due to insufficient instability. Tomorrow should see high temperatures in the lower 90s again under sunnier skies.

Wednesday – the heat wave continues with temperatures yet again expected to top out in the low-mid 90s with sunny skies. There could be a few isolated pop-up showers/thunderstorms late in the day with very limited coverage.

Thursday – expected to be the last day of the heat wave, sunny with high temperatures at or above 90.

NYC Weather Update – Aug 17, 2015

A heatwave over the weekend breaks Tuesday, as we enter an extended period of unsettled weather for the mid-week period. Temperatures cool off somewhat into the mid-80s, slightly above average for this time of year. Each day, except Tuesday perhaps will carry some small but non-zero chance of rain.

Rest of today – the possibility exists for some isolated thunderstorms to form over portions of the region this afternoon. The setup would be similar to yesterday when the temperature differential resulting from a sea breeze served as the trigger for some slow-moving storms. Plenty of instability from the heat and humidity and very little convective inhibition will mean that storms could form rapidly. However, the exact location of where these storms form is difficult to pinpoint. Areas that experience storms could expect heavy rain, otherwise expect mostly sunny skies with high temperatures that could touch record levels in the mid-90s.

Tuesday – a bit cooler with temperatures in the upper-80s and sunny skies to start, clouds increasing towards the evening.

Wednesday – high temperatures will cool off further into the mid-80s under cloud cover, and there will be a chance for rain throughout the day. This precipitation is associated with a slow-moving cold front approaching from the west.

Thursday – a similar day to Wednesday, perhaps with a bit more sun, but highs again in the mid-80s and a chance of rain through the day

NYC Weather Update – Jul 27, 2015

The heat will be the main weather story of this week, with temperatures of 90ºF or higher forecast to occur for a majority of the week. This heat does not appear to abate until at least this weekend. Incidentally, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, we’ve just hit 大暑 (literally “big heat”), a period of 2 weeks that are supposed to be the hottest of the summer. Fans of the heat, it is time for you to rejoice.

Rest of today – clouds this morning should slowly give way to more sun in the afternoon. The cloud cover now will help keep temperatures in the mid-80s.

Tuesday – a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, but otherwise hot with highs in the low-90s and a good amount of sunshine.

Wednesday – shaping up to be the hottest day of the week, with high temperatures in the mid-90s.

Thursday – with a cold front approaching from the west, there may be a few thunderstorms in the afternoon on Thursday which might grant some reprieve from the heat. Otherwise, sun and clouds with a high temperature in the low-90s.
